Need better UHD mp4 compatibility for HU series

I am using Serviio on Windows 10 with the Samsung (H-series) profile. Rendering device is a Samsung UHD 4K Smart TV, Model: UN55HU8500F with latest firmware. Attached are the support DLNA formats the TV supports obtained using UPnP Tools, AV Media Controller.

Apparently the Samsung H-series profile I'm using with Serviio doesn't have good 4k support for MP4 videos (either h264 or HEVC), even though these files play just fine using Windows WMP dlna server. I've tried many changes within the Servio Samsung profile itself, but nothing seems to work. So it appears as though the issue is within Serviio itself. As a side note, I noticed the profile tries to transcode h264 L4.1 and above. The TV supports BP/MP/HP up to L5.1 so no need to transcode this for the TV. However, fixing that still didn't make the mp4 4k videos play under Serviio.

Here are the specifics:

The MP4 file below shows up in server file listing, but has no information, i.e. 0 filesize. Clicking the file results in a "Not currently supported" error. Yes, its a h264 4k video, but the TV supports this as long as bitrate is under 50Mbps. FFmpeg details of file:

When converted to a MKV it plays just fine under Serviio without transcoding. I have transcoding turned off in Serviio. File details:

I then tried converting the video/audio codecs while still keeping the MP4 container to see what else would or would not play at 4k resolution. I found that MP4 plays just fine under Serviio after converting the audio to AC-3:

Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'D:\Media\Movies\Superman The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2013)\vidtest\test37.mp4':
Metadata:

handler_name : SoundHandler

I then tried re-encoding to HEVC 265 with AC-3. No luck, it doesn't play over Serviio. It shows up in the listing but with 0 filesize giving the same "Not currently supported" error. However, it plays perfectly using "cast to" under Windows 10 wmp. The info menu on the TV even shows it using the h265 codec at 4k with AC3 so I know it's not being transcoded by wmp. So this appears to be an issue just with Serviio. BTW, all of these vidoes play just fine when I browse to the Microsoft's WMP DLNA server from the TV, and without transcoding. However the windows built-in server has poor subtitle support and lacks other nice features Serviio provides. Here are the HEVC file details that won't play under Serviio:

Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'D:\Media\Movies\Superman The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2013)\vidtest\test47.mp4':

Any chance we could get Serviio updated to include the additional mp4 uhd support the HU series includes?

Re: Need better UHD mp4 compatibility for HU series

I believe the H profile already accounts for the correct DLNA formats for an HU set, but you are correct that for some reason they won't play over Serviio. I have one 4K test file. It is in the MKV container, and MediaInfo says AVC High@L5.1. It plays perfectly just accessing it from the computer via Windows Media sharing, but Serviio gives an error. My guess is Serviio believes the file needs to be transcoded, and FFMPEG can't handle it. Yours probably plays because you have transcoding turned off. I have files that need it, so I can't do that.

I'd like to find more downloadable 4K files for testing and demo purposes. Anyone found any sites with such animals? This file of Sintel is all I could find.

Perhaps someone can point out where Serviio is mistaken about needing to transcode this:

It supposedly transcodes it because of this contained within the H-series profile:

<!-- Transcode all h264 video with HIGH/MAIN > Level 4.1 on MPEG-TS stream with MPEG2VIDEO and ac3 audio transcoding -->
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="192" forceInheritance="true">
<Matches container="*" vCodec="h264" profile="high_10" />
<Matches container="*" vCodec="h264" profile="high" levelGreaterThan="4.2" />
<Matches container="*" vCodec="h264" profile="main" levelGreaterThan="4.2" />
<Matches container="*" vCodec="h265" />
<Matches container="mp4" vCodec="mpeg4" aCodec="lpcm" />
<Matches container="mp4" vCodec="dvvideo" />
<Matches container="mp4" vCodec="mjpeg" />
</Video>

However I can those levels to 5.2, remove that whole block or even delete profile.html entirely, and it has absolutely no effect on what happens. It always says resolution 3840x2160 not supported if transcoding is checked and if it isn't checked, 4k works on MKV files but only works on "some" mp4 files. So obviously since the effect is the same whether or not it can read in profiles.html, the issue has nothing to do with what's in that file. There is some bug in serviio itself. It looks like to me Serviio automatically blocks 4k resolutions when transcoding is enabled. And when it's disabled, the built-in formats for mp4 aren't complete, e.g. it can't handle 4k AVC with AAC (only AC3). I even tried modifying profile.html to fix this mp4 issue. For example I see this in the default profile:
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mp4">AVC_MP4_MP_SD_AC3</MediaFormatProfile>
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mp4">AVC_MP4_MP_HD_720p_AAC</MediaFormatProfile>
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mp4">AVC_MP4_MP_HD_1080i_AAC</MediaFormatProfile>
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mp4">AVC_MP4_HP_HD_AAC</MediaFormatProfile>

The H-series TV I have doesn't show those AAC formats as supported, only the AC3 one. It tried putting in the ones it does support under the H-series profile, but that didn't change anything. But is profile.html even used to determine compatibility of files, in particular when transcoding is off? If not, then there is nothing we can do unless Serviio is updated with better 4k support.

If you need a sample file, I can encode one in any format/codecs you want for testing. Or you could do this yourself with Avidemux. That's what I've been using to create my test files. Just take your existing 4k file, load it into Avidemux, adjust your A/V codecs and container format, and click save. It couldn't be easier.

Re: Need better UHD mp4 compatibility for HU series

I'll look into Avidemux. I only have the one 4K video, so that's the only one I can play with.

I don't know if my JU supports AAC audio, but I've already uploaded the Device Spy info into the Wiki, so I can check there when I get the time. I have a trip to England tomorrow and won't be back until Sunday. It's going to be a while before I can play around with the profile, but I think I will remove that whole block and see what I get.

Thanks!

Re: Need better UHD mp4 compatibility for HU series

Hi folks,

contrary to thread-opener, my serviio does not even list mp4 files which exceed a vertical resoluten of 1080p. Neither on my Samsung of HU series, nor on my second of JU series.

The issue does not seem to be about the used codecs, cause if I use SUPER video converter, choose mkv as output container and stream copy of both, audio and video (no change of codec, resolution etc.) the files get listed and play perfectly on both TVs.

What do I have to change in profiles.xml so that Serviio will list 4k files with mp4 container?

Thanks and regards,
J

Re: Need better UHD mp4 compatibility for HU series

This thread is rather old, but some information has come out since then. It seems the recent Samsung TVs, such as my JU, refuse to play any file that is transcoded. Basically, Samsung DLNA support is terrible. But they were at least listed.

I just checked my list of 4K demo files, and I see that most of them are in MP4 containers. The question then becomes what codecs are in your files. Mine have both H.264 and H.265 video, and I believe they are all 2 channel AAC audio. It's been quite a while since I've tried playing them with the Samsung interface, but I think they all played. I generally use my Roku Ultra for any 4K viewing.
