No MPEG-2 Skipping

Samsung series D supports skipping forward or back by 10 seconds by using the left/right keys.

This appears to work for all containers and codecs except MPEG-2, which means that anything transcoded to mpeg-ts/mpeg-2 will not skip.

I have remuxed my MPEG-2 videos with VideoRedo thinking this was due to a timecode problem but it didn't have any effect. Any one know why MPEG-2 will not skip?

This puts a bit of a damper on transcoding!

I'm not sure if it's container based or codec based or something else. I can ffwd in transcoded content (mpegts) on my B series.

It seems that not all mpegts is quite mpegts when it comes to ffwd. That is, I'm using Serviio mainly to watch Finnish TV recordings and for some reason ffwd consistently doesn't work with one of the channels (Nelonen). Works fine with all the rest.

I would guess there's no great differences between TV channel codecs etc, as they all are normal digital (SD) TV. If someone can point me to a direction on how to investigate this, I'd be happy to pursue.

I fed some working and non-working mpegts files directly to ffmpeg and got the following (excerpt):

This doesn't seem to be related to channel as I thought, but somehow to bitrate. Every time the bitrate is low, ffmpeg doesn't get it right and for example duration is reported errantly. The same duration is reported by my Bravia. Also there's no ffwd with these files.

Any ideas?

Nope. You might want to ask at a Sony forum, but I doubt they will help you there either.

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

I'd like to pull this back on topic... no Sony.. no transcode.. just the playing of simple old plain MPEG-2 videos.

On my Samsung D series TV and BluRay/Amp RCR, all my containers jump (left/right key, and Tools menu option) EXCEPT when playing an MPEG-2 video (which Tools/Information calls video/mpeg).

I'd like to know if this is a common Samsung problem or just a D series problem.

Please help by downloading this short 28meg MPEG video from the Prelinger archives http://www.prelinger.com/ using http://www.archive.org/download/swing_w ... _wing.mpeg
and testing it on your Samsung and posting your results here.

That will give us a consistent set of results.

This is important because Serviio only transcodes to MPEG-2 so if true, no trancoded video can be jumped which is unacceptable and we must find an alternate solution to allow transcoded skipping.

I would like to point out that my case does not involve transcoding. Instead, Serviio serves mpegts files to a set that natively supports mpegts.

Despite of that, time skipping does not seem to work if the file a) is of mpegts format and b) has low bitrate. Someone may want to investigate whether this is a Serviio issue or perhaps a bug in ffmpeg.

I can ffwd on this file using both Samsung B and C series (B650, C6520) - no transcoding is going on.

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

Damn!! What are your thoughts on this. How could Samsung drop this when its so basic? Since it happens on both my the D Series devices its hard to see it as a firmware bug... but why do all the other mime formats work.

One thing I do not understand is the relationship between the basic set of media formats that cover only TS and PS that display for the TV (which I sent you from Device Spy) and the other native formats that play and jump eg: AVC.mkv and DIVX.avi which have nothing to do with TS and PS. How can I transcode into one of these formats that do jump? Can you explain for me how these media format relate to these other playable file formats that only have mimes like video/x-mkv. Is there any way to transcode and send video/x-mkv to the client? Currently they all show as video/mpeg

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

For my part I'm closing this case. After further investigation I've come to conclusion that either this is really ffmpeg issue or alternatively I have bunch of broken files. Likely the latter.

(That is, I was able to manually replicate all the Serviio phenomena with the malfunctioning files - most likely Serviio is trying to do everything precisely as it should be.)

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

tvkdlna: Run your files thru videoredo to fix the probable timecode discontinuities that plague tv recordings.

If the files then work and skip, your problem is pure bad files and as the Samsung manual says "If the index table is corrupt, the seek(jump) function will not be supported".

If they still don't work, report your Samsung Device and model Series here as another example of "no MPEG-2 skipping".

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

As I assumed and have now tested, the MPEG files do skip on the series D if played as native files from the USB, so this is a pure Series D DLNA issue

What needs to be done to transcode to something other than video/mpeg?

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

We can only transcode into mpeg2ps or mpeg2ts or asf. Other formats are not live-stream friendly. When transcoding to mpeg2ts, we can usually keep the original video/audio streams and just remux in into the new container (so we keep original quality and it's faster and less cpu intensive). To transcode into mpeg2ps we have to transcode the video stream to mpeg2video, thus losing some quality and using a lot of cpu. ASF is Microsoft format only supporting WMV or VC1 video codecs so again, video stream has to be transcoded in most cases.

Re: No MPEG-2 Skipping

I've posted this in the CNET/Samsung forum:

Samsung D Series Products - DLNA Regression - New!

Samsung D Series Products - DLNA Regression
by jhb50 - 7/6/11 7:43 AM

B and C series Products that support All-Share, support the skipping function (left/right buttons jump 10 seconds) when playing mime type = video/mpeg .mpg files over DLNA. However the new 2011 D series products do NOT allow mime type = video/mpeg .mpg files to be skipped, although they do allow every other mime type to skip over DLNA.

This is an unacceptable regression of function because the video/mpeg format is the only one that can be used to transcode videos in real time from DLNA servers, hence any transcoded video to a D series device can no longer be skipped. They may only be played from start to end, and if play is stopped at midpoint, there is no way to resume from that point on. (the D button for continuous play is also disabled for these streamed .mpgs on the devices that support that function)

I can only assume that this is an error in the D Series design, and that it can be fixed with firmware updates for each D product.

Since this forum appears to be the only way to identify major issues to Samsung, I'd appreciate if the Samsung Rep could determine if this is a known issue, or something that is intentionally in the DLNA design.

The .mpg files do skip correctlly if played from a local USB HDD so the problem is unique to D Series DLNA. Tested on both my PN64D550 TV and HT-D5130 BR/RCR.

No. I thought about that, but haven't done it yet. When I did try their server earlier it just seemed to hang up on building the library so i threw it out!

Thanks for your help zip. OK so I tried to transcode the .mpg to asf.

Here is the profile ( I don't know which is the correct container for the .mpg file)
  Code:
<Video targetContainer="asf" targetVCodec="wmv2" forceVTranscoding="true" targetACodec="wmav2" maxVBitrate="15360">
          <Matches container="vob"/>
          <Matches container="mpeg"/>
          <Matches container="mpegps"/>
          <Matches container="mpeg_ps"/>
          <Matches container="MPEG_PS_NTSC"/>
          <Matches container="MPEG_PS_NTSC$0"/>
          <Matches container="mpg"/>
          </Video>

The log is posted below. It looks like the client is saying send me MPEG_PS_NTSC because I can play it OK, so you ignore the transcoding rules and even the force parameter. I see no reference to reading the rules in the log. I do not know the significance of the "Software caused connection abort: socket write error" which then continues to repeat down the log, but the file does play natively on the client as video/mpeg.

How do I get this to transcode?

I don't think you applied the transcoding config properly (maybe didn't restart the service?) as the value you are using are invalid. For list of valid containers etc, see http://www.serviio.org/index.php?option ... icle&id=24

OK thank you.. I removed all the containers but mpeg and it now transcodes but I am getting "Unsupported video codec for the wmv2" like another thread reported. I'm working on that now.

OK here is the log. Do you see anything wrong? Neither client will play it . Both say invalid Video codec.
