Some MKVs lock up c5500

Hi Folks,

I am finding a number (perhaps 20%) of the MKVs I try lock up my Samsung C5500. Its trys to play them I get a black screen and the time counter sticks at 00:00.

I have transcoding enabled and am using the lastest release of serviio.

Any ideas ? I have run one such file through media info, data below.

Many thanks

Keith

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

Hi Keith,

I am having exactly the same problem - but only with .mkv files encoded by IMMERSE (I guess they are using settings not supported by the Samsung). I'm trying to run them on my C5500 off my WD My Passport via USB, and they're locking up the system.

The only workaround I have found is to extract the video and audio tracks separately using MKVExtractGUI, and then to recombine them using mkvmerge (remembering to set the video rate to 23.976 fps). After this, they work fine, but it's a bit of an inconvenience.

Any other suggested solutions would be welcome.

Cheers,

Andy

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

Thanks Andy for that I'll give it a go.

I'm no expert, but I'd have expected Serviio to transcode these to something the samsung could play ?

Can you guys post your serviio.log files and post information on one of the files affected. (see signature on how)

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

I have created a detailed log, but its too big to post, I've put the latter stages below, if you need more email me and I can email the whole file.

Does it help, any ideas ?

PS Do not know if it helps but I just tried the file on my old and retired Netgear EVA8000 and it played fine.

Attacehd a rar file of the log, hope thsi is OK ?

file name is

Falling.Skies.S01E01-02.720p.HDTV.x264-IMMERSE.mkv

the logs above refere to a file called problem.mkv, which is just a copy of the same file moved to another location on the pc. The file called

falling.skies.s01e03.720p.hdtv.x264-immerse.mkv

has the same problem.
bad1.rar
Log file, I renamed it.

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

I did not see anywhere in the log that you tried to play the file.

Try this.
Stop serviio.
rename log file
start serviio
the try and play the file.

Attach that log file to this thread.

@ Motra - hes not running in debug mode so you wont ;)

@ kdp99 - turn on detailed logging then do as motra says above :)

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

Sorry guys, I'd made a mistake in setting debug on, got it right this time (I think), attached a new rar file.

The file locks the Samsug up, so I have to power it off aftre a few minutes
Thanks in advance

I've also pasted a bit of the file below, but the whole lot is in the rar file

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

OK, I've had another look into this, and the problem with the newer IMMERSE rips is that the mux application used (mkv2rls x264-tv) incorrectly sets the audio track's sampling frequency to 0, which not surprisingly messes up playback on some systems, including my Samsung BD-C5500.

Running "Mediainfo" on the file will give the correct frequency (e.g. 48 kHz) but "mkvinfo" will give "Sampling frequency: 0" in the audio track details.

The simple way round this is to use "mkvpropedit" to edit the .mkv file's properties - within a command window, navigate to the folder containing "mkvpropedit.exe" (e.g. cd c:\Program Files (x86)\MKVtoolnix) and then type:

> mkvpropedit d:\FBS01E06.mkv --edit track:2 --set sampling-frequency=48000

where "d:\FBS01E06.mkv" is the location and name of the file, "2" is the number of the audio track (as given by "mkvinfo"), and "48000" is the frequency, in Hz, given by "Mediainfo".

If this works properly, the application will reply:

The file is analyzed.
The changes are written to the file.
Done.

and running it through "mkvinfo" will confirm the new frequency value. And it should now run properly.

Hope this helps,

Andy

Re: Some MKVs lock up c5500

Sadly I have found some other files that the Samsung will not play, very similar to the problem above, except these do not lock it up, just give a black screen, then after a minute or so it jump out.

The edit described above in this post does not fix it, info on the file below, any ideas anyone ?

Thanks

Keith

Muxing mode : Header stripping <----- yep header compression is whats causing this file to not play

File needs to be manualy reencoded without header compression. This is not something that can be done by serviio

File needs to be manualy reencoded without header compression. This is not something that can be done by serviio

Firstly, many thanks Cerberus for the prompt and helpful reply.

I have done a bit of re-muxing, but am no expert, if I extract the audio and video from the MKV then re-mux to a new MKV should this sort it, or will the header compression be carried over into the new MKV ?

Thanks
