Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

Hello all:

I've recently started experimenting with Serviio - and I'm very impressed so far! Thanks to all those who have made it possible.

I'm running Serviio 0.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.6 into a Sony Bravia KDL-32EX403 via a wired home router connection; so far, the Bravia sees Serviio, and I appear to be able to play back H.264 / AAC files onto the Bravia successfully.

I was also hoping to play back some .ts files, saved from my Humax PVR-9200 DVB PVR machine; although the Bravia recognises the files (and displays an 'MPEG2' badge next to them), attempting to play them back results in a black screen and no audio output.

Please can you help me set this up?

Here is the result of ffmpeg for a sample file:

The KDL-32EX403 is running software PKG4.089EUL-0108.

If you can offer any guidance to help, I'd be really grateful!

Many thanks,

Pants.

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

I once tried to play files from a Hirschmann HD Recorder - as well .ts files - but Hirschmann puts timing information in a separate file ... well playback did go well with VLC but I also tried conversion and this failed with several converters I tried ...
The point is - such files are often not trustworthy ...

Ok, could you have a look at this tool: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/TsRemux
TsRemux is a transport Stream Re-muxer with blu-ray/Sat/OTA and now MPG/VOB/EVOB stream support. Ability to trim streams at the beginning and/or the end, Ability to pick and choose elementary streams to be kept, Ability to remux PCR-less streams, Ability to remux program streams (MPG/VOB/EVOB) into TS/M2TS, Ability to demux elementary streams as well as subtitle streams compatible with SUPreader (right click the selected stream with the mouse)

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

Yes yes ... I know in principle it should work ...
A friend of mine tried to copy .ts file from one HD Recorder to another and it didn't work ... so my assumption is that these devices do not produce 100% compatible streams ...

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

Hello all:

Thanks for your replies - I appreciate the rapidity and usefulness of them!

I don't know what this...

For testing, we could change the Sony Profile to force transcoding like this:

(snip)

I've tried what you suggested. However, the Bravia now didn't find any video files available in my .ts folder; previously, it did display files (and tagged them as MPEG2), but only played black and silence.

I don't think I've done anything stupid to cause this - I simply pasted your updated profile over the one in the Serviio config folder, relaunched the server and forced the library to refresh. If I have done something stupid, please let me know!! :)

Well this is entirely possible too!

I've found only VLC is able to playback these files previously - and even then, VLC doesn't display any playback timing information about the file...

Thanks for the suggestion; however, TsRemux is Windows-only - and I'm a Mac Bunny... ;)

I'm sure I'm teaching the community to suck eggs here, but I've found MPEG Streamclip to be able to handle these .ts files - I regularly use it to convert the .ts files into H.264 for loading onto my iPhone...

If it looks like I'm on a road to nowhere with these raw .ts files from the Hummy, I'm happy to be told this. I've got a library of these files, but I'm happy to, over time, convert them to a more useful container if it's going to be more compatible!

Thanks,

Pants.

Relaunched the server, did not take the change into account. You need to restart the serviio service.

Hello again:

Sorry - I didn't explain myself properly. I meant to write:

I quit the Serviio application and Console, pasted your updated profile over the one in the Serviio config folder and relaunched the Serviio application and Console. I then refreshed the TV's internet content to make sure, and forced the Serviio library to refresh too.

After doing this, the TV didn't recognise any files in the folder containing just .ts files.

Thanks,

Pants.

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

Could you retry with my modified profile, enable detailed logging, check the ffmpeg lines when start to transcode and post the command line?

Hello:

Of course I can; just one question: I don't understand the 'check the ffmpeg lines when start to transcode' bit. If the TV doesn't see the files at all, how would transcoding start?

Thanks,

Pants.

Ok, sorry, you said TV didn't recognise.. I thought it does not decode it.
So check the logging with the filename to understand why did it not added to the library.

Hello again:

Sorry for the long delays between posts - I work long hours, and then my wife wouldn't be too pleased if I got home and started debugging the TV whilst she's watching it... ;)

Anyway, here's the latest:

It seems I was too hasty in reporting that the TV did not list the .ts files after updating the profile - it does.

However, it still does not playback. The behaviour is different now: previously, I would get a black screen and silence when the TV attempted to play a .ts file. Now, I get a busy spinning whirlygig for a few seconds, then the message "Temporarily cannot access the server. Please retry." appears on the TV. Attempting a retry results in the same behaviour.

I have tried rewriting the .ts files into .mpeg files using MPEG Streamclip - and these are recognised and played back successfully. So, if the answer is simply to rewrite them, I'm ok with that!

Anyway, here's the output from the debug log. In this sequence, I tried playing the .ts file twice (unsuccessfully), and then successfully played back a .mpeg file:

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

Hi
I'm wondering if you have had the same issue as me. I have just set up my Sony Bravia and Sony wireless BluRay player. I have Serviio running and I see all of my movies (from my computer) on my bluray. I can play them but they keep stopping and starting, like it's streaming. Have you had this problem and if so, what did you do to correct it?

I'm on a Mac, OS 10.6.5.

Thanks,

Hi Kelli

Thanks for the response. I've not had the behaviour you described - my files either play back perfectly, or not at all (in the case of these .ts files).

For your information:
- I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.6;
- I have a wired Ethernet connection between computer and TV (via my home router);
- I've assigned a static IP address to my TV, so Serviio can find it easily each time I launch it (I run Serviio from my laptop, which isn't always at home);
- I've entered the IP address of my Mac's Ethernet port into Serviio, so that it connects out of the correct networking port.

Other than that, it all worked fine straight off the bat!

Hope that helps,

Pants.

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

yeah ts files are sometimes hard to deal with, but the simplest way to be able to play them is first to convert them to another format, like avi, which is supported by pretty much all players. I can recommend using Moviebox from Audials, it's a pretty good ts converter among other things and it supports all popular file formats. Anywho, just a suggestion :P

Re: Cannot Playback .ts file from Mac to Sony Bravia

@Moisie : Sorry for the long time....

But for your TS file, its seems that ffmpeg failed to transcode the file:
Could you retry locally the same ffmpeg command line and report the ffmpeg log error ?
/Users/big_dave/Downloads/serviio-0.5-osx/Serviio.app/Contents/Resources/Java/../../MacOS/ffmpeg -i /Volumes/500GB FreeAgent HD/Serviio Test/009_2010Dec04_2211_QI_XL.ts -y -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -r 25.0 -g 15 -copyts -acodec ac3 -ab 192k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -sn -f mpegts /var/folders/iQ/iQ4Sullk2RWewE+8ZME0bU+++TI/-Tmp-/Serviio/transcoding-temp-427-MPEG2TS.stf

@jarpi : disagree, ts files are much more supported by dlna devices
