Serviio and Streaming to PS3: For a Layman

Hello,

I don't wish to incite hate if this is explained in another thread --- I have searched for the topics of Serviio and PS3, and read extensively, although I have found a lot of the discussion to be a little over my technical expertise, and I was hoping to get something for those of us who are visiting this website with less expertise.

In short, I am trying to stream Popcorn Time to my PS3 by playing to VLC (supported by Popcorn Time), and directing Serviio to an IP address that VLC associates with that stream. The process for doing this is explained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZcuDTQZ7yM

The issue is, as many identify on the Youtube discussion, that the PS3 says "data type not supported" once you click to open the stream. Here is what I gather from my research on Serviio threads: It's likely the movie files are in an unsupported format. However, I understand Serviio to do the transcoding on-the-fly (I think this is a layman's explanation). Also, if I simply let the movie download all the way, and then play the downloaded video from the Library, it works flawlessly...

So perhaps there's some insight here as to why the Live Stream, online soure, isn't working for a video, but the same video played from the Library is working. First and foremost: I do check the Stream URL and it give the green checkmark, so that isn't the issue.

Thanks very much everyone. I'd love to keep the discussion moderately in layman's terms, in order to help those users in a similar situation. If this does already exist, I apologize --- please simply point me there.

Edit: I've managed to get the following output from ffmpeg, as per the Serviio wiki on live streaming troubleshooting:
  Code:
  libavutil      54. 14.100 / 54. 14.100

Re: Serviio and Streaming to PS3: For a Layman

If i had to take a wild guess, the problem could be the resolution/colorspace
  Code:
yuv420p(tv, bt709/bt709/unknown), 1280x696 [SAR 1:1 DAR 160:87]

serviio will transcode if the codec are not supported but won't check for colorspace or resolution, can you try having vlc resize to 720p and see if the ps3 will keep not showing the video? Use the stream/transmit mode to create a proxy while setting video resize options on the broadcasted stream

Re: Serviio and Streaming to PS3: For a Layman

I am having the same issue as the OP. When I first installed Popcorn Time, the first 4 or so movies and shows worked great. The next day when I tried to play anything including a couple if the same movies, I get a data type not supported error on the PS3.

I cleared the download cache
Restarted VLC, Popcorn Time and Serviio multiple time
Verified the movie file types are supported by PS3

Anyone have an idea as to what could be causing this issue and how to fix it?
I am not sure how to try the suggested resolution adjustment fix as described. Could maybe walk me through setting that up?
