LG 49UB850V - Profile for MKV HEVC 4K

Hello all,

Has anyone managed to play via DLNA a 4k mkv file encoded via HEVC? This seems to work only via USB, but normally with a proper profile should work via serviio.

Thanks in advance!

The Serviio version is 1.9 and the profile used is "LG TV / player". I have several files which are not recognized via DLNA but work fine via USB.

Re: LG 49UB850V - Profile for MKV HEVC 4K

The LG profile doesn't do much by default - it doesn't transcode anything.

To vary the profile to transcode your HEVC videos, try the following:

  • Edit the file config\profiles.xml using your favourite text editor (Notepad++ recommended)
  • find the line
    </MediaFormatProfiles>
    in the "LG TV / player" profile.
  • Add the following below that line
      Code:
    <Transcoding>
          <!-- Transcode all h265 video -->
          <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video maxHeight="1080"  targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384" DAR="16:9" >
                <Matches container="*" vCodec="h265"/>
          </Video>
    </Transcoding>
  • Save the file
  • Restart your PC

If it doesn't work, try it without the maxHeight="1080" and let me know. You may also need to make this number smaller (eg. 720) for other files (if the aspect ratio is > 16:9). After each change save and restart.

If still not working revert the changes and let me know. You will need to make this change every time Serviio is upgraded.

Other files that are not being played may need to be added to the transcode block. Note that this will transcode ALL HEVC videos. Your PC must have the power to do this in real time (becomes a factor particularly with 4K video). If you only need to transcode HEVC 4K video (and not all HEVC) let me know - not sure it can be done, but we may be able to think of a work around.

Re: LG 49UB850V - Profile for MKV HEVC 4K

Hi,

I will try this, but maybe I am understanding something wrong. I thought transcoding was needed only for a TV with a different resolution which does not decode HW the HEVC.
So basicly transcoding of this file will re-encode it in realtime with another Video and Audio codecs. This TV is 4K (3840x2160), same resolution as the file, and decodes HW via USB the HEVC.
So why I need transcoding?

Regarding the power of the PC, it is a HP MicroServer Gen8 upgraded to a Xeon 1265L V2 (quad core with HT) so I do not think the transcoding is a problem, what I do not understand is why I need it.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: LG 49UB850V - Profile for MKV HEVC 4K

It is a common misconception - just because the file plays by USB doesn't mean it will play via DLNA. Seems TV designers often have two different apps/sub systems - one for direct play via USB vs one for DLNA.

To complicate matters, DLNA pre-dates MKV files (there is no allowance for MKV in the DLNA spec). To overcome this, in the absence of transcoding, Serviio simply pushes any MKV directly to your TV. Given this, if Serviio is simply pushing the file to your TV as-is, and your TV cannot play it, it follows that your TV cannot support that file at that resolution over DLNA.

Hence your only option (other than playing via USB) is to transcode the file to something your TV will accept over DLNA.

Hope that makes sense....

Re: LG 49UB850V - Profile for MKV HEVC 4K

Thanks a lot for explanation, I was not aware of all these limitations. So your comment is very useful to me to understand the situation.
My purpose is to preserve the 4k resolution and audio quality of the file. The transcoding will alter it in any way? Because otherwise, I can stick to USB and leave it as it is...
