P50GT50 - Embedded subs only work on generic profile

(I've read a lot of the other related posts, but haven't been able to fix this - feel free to glare if i missed the obvious. Also, thanks to the creators of this fine program!)

I've got a Panasonic Viera P50GT50, and have the following problem:

-Viera 2011/2012 profile.
-Plays everything I've tried. MKV at full HD, no jittering, audio is fine
-external subs are fine. Embedded subs in MKV's do not work. They are not an option on the TV when I press the option button; instead file shows as having no subs.

-Generic profile
-the same mkv files as before either skip frames or have video artifacts, audio is fine except for skipping
-all subtitles, including embedded subtitles, work fine. Oddly enough I don't see an option on the TV to select subtitles when using the generic profile.

I have tried removing all MKV sections from the 2012 transcoding section of the profile, all all combinations of the three options under the Subs tab, and forcing burned in subs. Language code is eng.
I have also tried the various profile entries suggested in this forum for 2012 Panasonic's with subs issues, and copying the Subs section of the generic profile into the 2012 Panasonic section. File info is:

Re: P50GT50 - Embedded subs only work on generic profile

The video in the MKV file that you have given detail for is encoded using a High-10 H264 profile. AFAIK Panasonic TV's cannot play this high-10 profile natively - at least not without skipping frames and producing video artifacts (as you experienced when using the Generic profile - the generic profile does not transcode this file but sends it natively to your TV).

So in order to play the video smoothly it must be transcoded. This is what happens when you use any of the Panasonic profiles: the file is transcoded in order to re-encode the video to something that your TV can play. Unfortunately when transcoded the embedded subs cannot also be included in the transcoded file.

You have two choices to fix this:
  1. In Serviio Console, on the Delivery Subtitles tab set all check boxes on, and set the drop down box to "Always". This will tell Serviio to extract the embedded subtitles and then burn them into transcoded video stream. While this option should work there are caveats;
  2. Using a third party tool such as Handbrake, re-encode the video to a h264 profile that is playable by your TV (usually H264 level 4.1 and below). Alternatively, if you downloaded the file, find a version that is encoded with a playable profile level
The problem with the first option is that:
  • It is processor intensive. You may not have the grunt to do this.
  • It affects all files that have subtitles (even the ones that can presently be played natively). This means you could be doing a lot of transcoding even when your TV could have played the files natively. Of course you could only set these transcode options when needed, but thats painful.
I suspect you don't have many MKV files which have high-10 (or level 4.2 and above) h264 profile levels, so the re-encode option may be a better and easier approach.

Re: P50GT50 - Embedded subs only work on generic profile

Thanks for the advice.
I've already tried having all three Sub options ticked and setting Serviio to force burned in subs, but it hasn't resolved it - subs still don't sidplay. My PC normally has enough grunt to transcode, so long as I don't try & use it for anything else at the time

Having said that, after changing the subs setting do I actually need to reboot to get Serviio to pick it up, or just stop & start the service? (I saw a few forum posts that advised Serviio might not pick up changes without a reboot.)

afaik it doesn't need a restart to work, but try it.... you do need to press Save though for it to work. Make sure it is set to "Always" - not to "Only when required".
If that doesn't work, post a detailed log showing you playing the file.
