TX-l37ET5B, Some MKVs are corrupted during playback?

Hi,

I have a couple of MKVs that 'should' play fine but don't, they play and I get sound but the picture is all corrupted, a bit like digital interference that you get on transmitted DVB. Ill attach 2 mediainfo for 2 files that don't play and 2 that do play so we can compare.

Doesn't play...

What is the difference between them that is preventing the first 2 from playing properly? I get the same result with transcoding on or off.

Thanks
Mark.

Re: TX-l37ET5B, Some MKVs are corrupted during playback?

Is it the 'Format settings, ReFrames : 2 frames' part that is possibly causing the problems? Another example of a film that doesn't play is

From what I can see is that the ones that don't play properly have this ReFrames : 2 frames part. The ones that do play have ReFrames : 4 frames.

Anyone else having problems like this?

Thanks

Re: TX-l37ET5B, Some MKVs are corrupted during playback?

Anyone? Anyone at all?

Someone other than me must of bought The Hobbit and made an MKV out of it and found it wont play properly.

Is there a way to change the Ref frames in an MKV without losing and detail and quality?

Not that I know of. The video must be re-encoded which will always result in loss in quality (whether its a perceptible loss in quality is another matter - give it a go).

Ive never heard of too smaller reframe value causing issues - its generally the other way around as a higher reframe value means the renderer must both store more intermediate frames in memory and do more processing, which can result in stuttering. Have you tried remuxing the video - this causes no loss in quality, but recreates the MKV container:

    ffmpeg -i "E:\MKV\Pirates Band of Misfits.mkv" -c copy -map 0 "E:\MKV\Pirates Band of Misfits new.mkv"

Re: TX-l37ET5B, Some MKVs are corrupted during playback?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I'm away from my PC at the moment so can't remember what I did exactly but I did run the hobbit through some software in its Panasonic setting and got a file out at the end still with 2 reframes but now a little over 5gb in size, it did play on the TV but the quality of the original 30 odd GB file defiantly wasn't there anymore.

I have no idea how to do the ffmpeg thing you suggested.

I'll be back later hopefully with the name of the software I used to reprocess the hobbit.

Thanks
Mark.

It was xmedia recode that I used on the Hobbit, im not sure what it does really, I just selected the Panasonic profile and let it run.

Re: TX-l37ET5B, Some MKVs are corrupted during playback?

Well i have a Panasonic ASW504 (2014series) and the same problem.

I create my MKV files with MakeMKV. the files that a causing problems have "ReFrames : 2 "

ReFrames: 4 is okay.

btw: The 2013 Profile does not work properly

.mkv + external .srt doesnt work

Re: TX-l37ET5B, Some MKVs are corrupted during playback?

Try remuxing the file as described in my earlier post and see if that helps.

I suspect your TV doesn't support MKV's with external subtitles, only embedded (seems common amongst Viera TVs). So you either need to:

  • embed the subtitles within the MKV (which is what I would do as the file can then be played natively which is always better). MKVMerge is a good tool to use for this purpose; or
  • burn them in by setting the appropriate options on the Delivery, Subtitles tab (Enable Burned In, and set to Always). This will transcode these files and add the subtitles to the video stream.
Note that the 2013 profile hasn't been tested with 2014 TV's (I am aware of one issue so far with AVI files) so any feedback from 2014 users is appreciated.

Well it does. At least with SMB/CIFS shares.

But over DLNA it seems to just work with embedded subtitles

That's consistent with other Viera TVs.
