Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

(I've placed this post into the Panasonic subforum but I don't really think the problem described can have anything to do with the brand of TV)
I've just left the cosy, familiar environment of Win2K after 11 years and, having never even played with either XP or Vista between times, I'm now trying to get to grips with my shiny new PC and its Windows 7 HP. This process of course includes getting Serviio up & running again.
My TV, my router and the Ethernet connection to the TV remain exactly as they were with the Win2K PC, with the change of PC, the change of Windows version and the new Serviio version being the only new factors in my setup.
I had installed Serviio 0.4.2 on my Win2K PC and later upgraded it to 0.5.0 without any problems whatsoever, so it was with no trepidation at all that I saw that 0.5.1 had been released just about the time that I changed over to my new Win7 PC. I installed 0.5.1 and went through the normal settings in the Serviio Console.
In "Status", Serviio reported my TV as an "Unrecognized device" with a "Generic DNLA profile" (I can't remember how it was reported on my Win2K machine, but I don't recall being obliged to make any manual adjustments). I tried manually changing the "Generic DNLA profile" to "Panasonic Viera" to reflect the actual TV, but this change didn't stick after a reboot, so I deleted the entry via the "Remove" button and replaced it via the "Add" button with the same IP address as found by Serviio and chose the name "Panasonic TV". I then changed the profile to "Panasonic Viera" and this time the settings were retained after a reboot.
So far so good, but after selecting the "Media Server" function on the TV, it takes over half a minute to display the Serviio logo (but at least it sees Serviio). I don't recall the TV taking so long to connect to Serviio on the Win2K PC, though.
Then I ran into the problem that prompted this post. When I select the Serviio server on the TV, the folders with the "Category names" enabled (not disabled) in "Presentation" are shown, but the TV displays no content for these folders, despite that in "Library" I had added a bunch of Video and Image folders via the "Add local..." button and saved everything. After a reboot these Library settings are retained and I have double-checked on the Win7 PC that the local folders are truly present and do indeed contain the expected files exactly as was the case on the old Win2K PC.
Any idea why I have problems using a Win7 PC having previously had no problems at all using a Win2K PC?

There is no list of added files. Make sure the folders are shared correctly and the user running Serviio service has got read access to the folders.

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

Just FYI, to be able to send you a clean log I uninstalled Serviio, rebooted, reinstalled Serviio, adjusted settings and library and rebooted.
Not wanting to display all my personal image and video filenames on a public forum, I changed all these in the log to xxxxx.jpg or xxxxx.avi (offline naturally - didn't change the actual log).
My situation remains the same as described in my original post: Serviio and its folders not disabled under "Presentation" are displayed on the TV, but no library folders or files are displayed in those Serviio folders.

Here's the "cleaned up" log (I hope it meets your needs!):

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

I'll need you to post DETAILED log (see link in my signature). I can see the files are added, so it's ok, but I'll need to see the detailed log of when you browse the folders. You could also confirm the files are there by browsing Serviio via AV Media Controller from Intel tools (link in signature)

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

Here at last (I hope!) is the requested detailed log (third time lucky as they say). See attachment.
Re confirming the files are there by browsing Serviio via AV Media Controller from Intel tools, I installed the tools, found the AV Media Controller but I wasn't able to make it do anything useful. My brain is too small, I suppose. If this browsing of Serviio is important to your considerations, please tell me how to get AV Media Controller to do what you want it to do.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

In the tools, you should see Serviio on the left side, you should be able to expand that and see your folders (Audio,Video,Images) and all the other categories.

Log is correct now, I can see your browse request but then it doesn't return anything, which I'm not sure why. Did you change your profiles.xml? Does this happen only for videos of also for images/audio?

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

In the tools, I don't see Serviio at all. All I'm doing is double-clicking AV Media Controller.exe and I get a dialog(?) called AV Media Controller (which is encouraging!) but just with two folders(?) called "Media Renderers" and "Content Directories", each containing the columns "Names = Values" listing "Manufacturer = Open Source", "Product Name = Media Controller", "Version = 1.0.4083.20052". None of the menus File, View or Help suggest anything useful to me (and Help calls no Help file).

I haven't changed profiles.xml - well, not manually and not via Serviio intentionally. See copy below.

My TV sees Serviio and displays the Serviio folders "Image", "Audio" and "Video" (all the other possibilities in "Presentation" are disabled), but all are empty - none of the subfolders that I still see in my PC folder and that I used to see on the TV with Serviio under Win2K

Are you saying that you only enabled Audio/Video/Images but disabled all the categories inside, like Series, Folder, Movies etc? If yes than it won't work, you have to select at least one of the subcategories as those actually include media items. Audio/Video?image only include other (sub)categories.

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

Yes, I had set all subfolders to "Disable". I have now set the subfolder "Folder" in each category "Image", "Audio" and "Video" to "Display content only". I can now see everything on the TV, so thanks for the tip and sorry for having wasted your time. On the other hand maybe there should be a warning for idiots like me not to set all subfolders to "Disable? If the possibility is there, someone is going to use it.

I am, however, pretty sure that I had disabled all those subfolders in 0.5.0 under Win2K. Could my memory be playing tricks? Or in other words did you make any changes in this area for version 0.5.1?
Also, as I already stated in an earlier post in this thread, my recollection is that my TV found Serviio much more quickly with 0.5.0+Win2K than is the case now with 0.5.1+Win7. Is needing 30-45 seconds on a wired connection normal would you say? Once Serviio is found, all my media files are available instantly, with no noticeable delays when switching the TV from one file or folder to another.

(Currently I still have the old Win2K PC in storage until I'm absolutely satisfied with the new Win7 machine. When that day comes, I plan to retrieve the Win2K PC, reconnect it to wipe all its HDDs and then dispose of it, but I don't know when this will be. I will have a look at the Serviio console and check whether my memory is right or wrong regarding the above)

It might be down to the network or try changing update Serviio service startup options to "Automatic (Delayed)" viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1931#p10477

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

Changing Serviio to "Automatic (Delayed)" causes it not to start at all.Instead, the message with the heading "Serviio Error" and the text "Cannot connect to Serviio server, it does not seem to be running" is displayed. No idea if that message comes from Serviio or from Win7, but I presume the latter. Manually starting the Serviio service in Services seems to work OK in that "Started" is displayed, but there's no sign of a Serviio icon in the system tray or indeed anywhere, so I wasn't able to call the Console. Inserting a Bound IP address doesn't help in avoiding this behaviour.
After reverting Serviio to "Automatic" in Win7 Services and rebooting, having a Bound IP address inserted in Serviio doesn't reduce the time it takes the TV to see Serviio either. The network is the same one as previously with my Win2K PC - no changes at all.
How long a delay would you (or any forum member running a Panasonic Viera with Serviio) say is normal before Serviio is seen on the TV?

Edit: For info, the connection between my Win7 PC and my Panasonic Viera TV is operating at 130 Mbit/s

That error comes from the serviio console if it trys to start before the serviio service it will kick out that error. If you manualy start the serviio service you will then have to manualy start the console to or yes it will not be availible on the taskbar

windows 7 is annoying the last thing it loads is the network drivers so untill the network starts serviio wont be able to be access by your tv upto a minute is about right.

Edit: For info, the connection between my Win7 PC and my Panasonic Viera TV is operating at 130 Mbit/s

i very much doubt that your tv will run at 130Mbit/s as the interface on your TV will be 10/100, so max it will run at is 100Mbit/s

Hi Cerberus
Thanks for your comments, especially nice to see you're in Reading - lived in Tilehurst 1965-1993 . . .

You are of course right. I was responding to zip having queried the network quality: I should have said the connection from PC to TV is standard hard-wired Ethernet (ie. not wireless) but with part of the run covered via a pair of Devolo power line units running at 130 Mbit/s (instead of their theoretical 200 Mbit/s)

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

The delay is probably caused by the initial set of multicast packets sent by Serviio is lost, the second set (a minute or so later) already finds it's way to the TV.

Does this happen when you turn on the TV while Serviio is running or start Serviio after the TV has been running?

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

If I start Serviio with the TV off, then turn on the TV and select Media Server on it, I have to wait an age (<1 min) before the Serviio icon is displayed.

If I stop Serviio with the TV off, then turn on the TV and select Media Server on it, get Mrs DNLAhooray to watch the screen, then click the "Start server" button on the Serviio Console, then within a couple of seconds I hear Mrs DNLAhooray's shout that the Serviio icon has appeared on the TV (and this shout occurs a few seconds before "Stopped" changes to "Running").

So it seems you must be right about the lost packets. Any workaround?

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

Not, unless you want to click Stop/Start server. The TV should be searching for servers on its startup and Serviio responds. The packets can get lost either way. It's just a bit weird that it happens every time for you.

You could enable detailed logging and watch changes made to the log when you start the TV. You should see some M-SEARCH requests incoming and Serviio responding to those.

Re: Switch from Win2K to Win7 and from 0.5.0 to 0.5.1

After enabling detailed logging, I went along to the TV and - lo and behold - on my first attempt I timed the appearance of the Serviio icon at, would you believe, 13 seconds. A first for this Win7 setup. So then of course I performed a lengthy series of timed attempts and found a goodly spread from 10 or so up to 45 or so seconds, which I suppose is the norm. Please don't ask me why I saw only l-o-o-o-n-g timings before, but I did. I propose to see how it goes and will report back any recurrence of the persistent 30-45 sec delays.
