This is most often caused by a permissions issue. I can't speak about the MacOS, but under Windows Serviio runs under a limited privilege account, and cannot access non-local resources. Depending on how MacOS shows that external drive, Serviio might not have permission to access it. I don't know the procedures for checking/changing access permissions under MacOS.
