The checkboxes are always there because they serve multiple purposes. They show when an item is selected, but they also inform the user in the first place that they can do things to the list items. They can also be used to start the action mode (user either long clicks and list item, or clicks a checkbox to start). Most of the apps that apply this design pattern use small checkboxes so I want to keep them always visible as that is what users will get used to.
Having said that, I'm not that happy about the layout for online sources. It looked OK when I had audio, image and video icons, even if they were redundant, but they were redundant so I removed them. I might try putting the type icon just above the checkbox, and the media type icon next to the source url (slightly under the title). Now that refreshing single or multiple items is easier, I could also remove the dedicated refresh button.
