Stream video of Desktop

Hi,

Serviio should offer feature where it creates a video of the Desktop (including mouse movement) of the system it is running on. This video is then streamed (if requested) to all DLNA clients.

DLNA clients would have an extra video file called desktop.video.mkv, which if selected initiates Serviio to stream the video of the Desktop Serviio runs on.

Scenario where this might be interesting: I sit on my couch and look at my Samsung TV. I run Serviio on my Windows laptop which is close by. I have a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard connected to my laptop and can use both from the couch. If my suggested feature is available I could for example just use Serviio to forward my Desktop to my Samsung TV and then for example browser the internet from my couch. That would be amazing! I think no other DLNA server offers this.

Thanks...Sampy

Do you realize the delay of the mouse movement? The screen has to be transcoded and sent over the network. I don't think that would be a very nice experience.

Actually the video-stream can be compressed very much. Most of the time the desktop image does not change. The program NoMachine allows this kind of thing via the internet. You can remotely control a Linux-Desktop in a Window from a Windows machine with it. They also compress the image from the Linux desktop and send it to my Windows client - and it feels really fast. I basically feel no difference to sitting in front of the Linux machine.

The experience itself could only be measured once somebody tries to implement it. If the first implementation is at least somewhat useable optimization could carry its way.

If there are huge delays between mouse-movements and the visualisations of such movements on the TV, it is probably due to some caching of the stream by the DLNA client before it is shown. Maybe one can switch this off.

Anyways, this feature would be really amazing. Serviio would basically turn into a wireless Media Center where you can do browsing, checking your email, etc. from your couch! This would be just amazing!

Thanks,
Sampy

Re: Stream video of Desktop

Another thought.

Even if the Mouse-Delay is huge - which I don't think it is - it may be no problem. I can still use my laptop to do interesting things. One Example:

I give a presentation (e.g. Powerpoint) on my laptop. I look at the laptop screen and talk. The people listening to me look at the 60 inch TV which displays content served by Serviio. Even if there is 1-2 delay it is no problem.

What do you think? Sounds really really useful ;)

Thanks,
Sampy

thanks for the info. Do you know screenr.com? It is a Java-based service to capture videos of one's screen. It is programmed in 100% Java. So the technology should be there. Maybe it is to slow for our purposes and it is better to use ffmpeg directly.
