Buffer live streams?

I am using Serviio 0.6.2 on Ubuntu 11.10. I came across this page http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=live_stream_folders and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed by it. my only issue is that some of the channels (HD especially) can stutter. I presume it's due to a buffering issue and I wondered if Serviio or my computer could buffer the stream before streaming it to my Sony Bravia KDL-40CX523?

Thanks for any help, I have been a user for a year now and have donated money to the cause - keep up the good work! :D

Re: Buffer live streams?

Stuttering on live streams can be caused by any or a combination of the following:

1. slow hardware
2. insufficient RAM
3. low disk space
4. other simultaneous processes running on Serviio server using lots of CPU time
5. router problems or congestion
6. internet download speed too slow
7. wireless lan too slow
8. actual live stream causing the stuttering
9. transcoding - if file won't play natively on your renderer, then transcoding requires more CPU power

You can try to compare your media player device to VLC or XBMC to notice differences in stuttering.

What hardware are you using on the Serviio server?

Re: Buffer live streams?

What is the hardware of the PC (CPU, number of cores, memory, OS) that Serviio is running on?

Re: Buffer live streams?

Your system may be too slow to transcode on-the-fly high bitrate streams. My system uses the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.40 GHz with 2 GB RAM and it exhibits the same type of stuttering problems on high bitrate streams.

That's certainly a good question.

You might have a look at this thread: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3810&p=36247&hilit=increase+buffer#p36247

It talks about mkv files stuttering and zip said "you could try to increase network socket buffer. Default is 64536".

Zip also posted a link to "Supported system properties" which includes the network socket buffer here: http://www.serviio.org/index.php?option ... icle&id=43
