[SOLVED] Jerky Pano Bluray playback

Hi all,

I use serviio 1.8

Some files are stuttering when I play them on my bluray, very jerky playback.

Here is a log from serviio in attachment from when I play the movie and the mediainfo for the movie that stutters I last tried:

Thanks guys, still working great on chromecast but the bluray in is my room, would love to have movies going in there.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

That file should play easily, based on what I see there. How is your player connecting to the Serviio computer, wired or wireless?

I examined the Pano BD profile, and I can't tell for sure if it's being transcoded or not. I wouldn't think it would be necessary. Try using the Generic profile and see if it a) plays and b) stutters.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

It's on a wired connection.

Switching to general fixes it from jerking and fixes the aspect ratio (no more letter box).

Thanks!

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

So the Pano BD Player profile is doing something that isn't necessary. Unfortunately, that's extremely difficult for Zip to determine and adjust (he'd have to have every make/model player, and that's unreasonable), so comments like yours should assist him with changes if possible.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

OK cool here are some notes:

On this movie The Sunchaser it stutters immediately with Panasonic Blu-ray profile. Under general it played fine except the last 10 minutes were stuttering. It's a two hour movie.

But the aspect ratio fits my TV perfectly with general.

I know it's not possible for one guy to know every device in existence and mine is old so glad to have any support.

I don't know if it's the length of the movie or the strength of my network or some other problem.

Had been bullet proof for TV shows, mostly mp4's, 20-30 minutes long, any file size no stutter.

This is the first time I've tried to watch a full length movie in a while. I'll try more of them to see if the problem persists.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

Well, by the info you posted above, the average bitrate is only around 1.4 Mbps, which is minimal. It's higher resolution than a DVD rip, but an uncompressed DVD file can still see average bitrates more than triple that.

I asked a question earlier that you overlooked. How is the Serviio computer and the Panasonic player connected? Are they both wired, or is one or the other wireless? If you are using wireless somewhere in the chain, you might be experiencing interference, just enough to impact your higher resolution streams.

Lastly, what sort of hardware are you running Serviio on? Serviio doesn't seem to care much about RAM, but CPU speed and core count can certainly impact performance. Which OS?

Good for wired. Your computer is about what my test server was before I updated it. Being 32 bit, Windows doesn't quite see all 4 gig of your ram, and adding more does nothing. You'd have to install Windows 64 bit to use more ram.

That said, for files that don't require transcoding you have plenty pf power. Even transcoding into H.264 (which takes the most power) would be OK if you're only streaming to a single player.

So if the Generic profile is working for you, stick with it. If you discover a small number of videos that won't play, it would probably be easier/faster to convert them into a playable format.

The Serviio pc has 47 processes and is over 50% cpu usage (not from serviio from other stuff). I am going to wait until the computer has more resources free.

I think that is the problem, not having enough cpu when the pc is multitasking.

Here is mediainfo for a show that does stream without interruption or stutter:

So it seems the higher the bitrate the more my panasonic has a hard time.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

I'm beginning to suspect the Pano player just can't handle higher bitrate video over DLNA. I know that Panasonic seems to have discontinued offering DLNA support in their later players, or at least downplays it so much it's tough to determine what they do support. Looking at their current web site it seems only the expensive 4K Blu Ray player supports DLNA.

Or there's just something wrong with the Pano. I can't see any reason for those files not to play. Only other thing I can think of is running Serviio with the Debug logging turned on and see if there are any answers there.

You're right it won't play this without jerky time the whole way because it's 3.2 mbps bit rate:

Low res plays fine. Thanks for figuring it out. Kind of a bummer though I don't think there is any solution other than purchasing a more compatible device.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

3.2 Mbps is nothing. I have DVD rips that exceed that easily. There's no excuse for your Pano not playing that smoothly. I don't think I ever asked what model of Panasonic you have. But my 6 year old Panasonic ST30 TV doesn't have any problem with files like this. Although I rarely use the Pano DLNA player anymore. I have a Roku 4 connected to that set and use it instead. BTW, a Roku player should play that file without transcoding, and I've seen my Roku players handle files with average bitrates over 30 Mbps without stutter or buffering.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

I watched the same flic on chromecast and generic profile and it transcoded to ~450 kbps ts files that played beautifully without interruption.

With the pano profile selected, playing on the pano bluray, it transcodes an 8.2 gb 11.3 mbps stf file that is hurky jerky, even if played locally on vlc on serviio host pc.

The player is BDT230 and I got it three years ago and I think it was used or refurbished or something like that when I got it, 2013 model.

Time to get roku then I suppose.

I even did factory reset to stock firmware and no dice, same weird playback.

While on dlna of over 1 mbps bitare you can see the counter of the movie runtime double back:

00:01....00:02.....00:003....00:04......00:05......00:06.........00:03.......00:04.......00:05.........00:06........00:04...........00:05...........00:06...........00:07

There is a lot of things like that with dlna that technically work just not as well as advertised. I guess the pano bluray is one such device. Oh well I could pawn it or something once I get the roku.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

The log shows that in 12 seconds it says streaming then I/O error 14 times, as if it feverishly is attempting to stream and failing over and over.

Does this support your theory that the pano can't handle bitrate or is this evident of some kind of networking bottleneck at the host pc?

Not really sure what socket write error is but thats the only error in the log and it appears whenever I try to watch bitrate over 1000 kbps on panasonic dmp-bdt230.

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

WOOHOO! Solved!

I figured it out finally it was a network problem.

If you have jerky playback and are getting the connection reset by peer socket write error, this is how I fixed it:

Backup, uninstall, and delete the windows driver for your gigabit ethernet on your server. Reinstall and reboot, then enjoy high def streaming like a boss!

Thanks for trying to help me bro, so happy to be streaming clean finally!

Re: Jerky Pano Bluray playback

I have to say I never considered a driver issue on the server. Have to keep that in my toolbox. Thanks for reporting your solution. :D
