Connection has timed out

I've looked up and down the forums as well as other websites and blogs with Serviio problems and cannot find a solution. I can access the MediaBrowser/DLNA Server locally. I cannot however access either of those outside of the local machine its running on. Strangely enough, WIndows Media Player on my PC as well as our Samsung Smart TV do appear and are allowed under the status page in the Console. My Server is 192.168.1.101 and I am trying to connect to http://192.168.1.101:23424/mediabrowser/ and keep receiving a Connection has Timed out error on my PC. I thought maybe it was firewall but found out the installer set the proper rules. So I disabled the server firewall and my computers firewall and antivirus and still could not connect. I have a fresh install of Java as well as a fresh install of Serviio. The server is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 and my pc is running Windows 10 Creators Update x64. Someone please advise me where to find the logs so I can post them as well.

Re: Connection has timed out

Can the computer ping the server? If not, then you have a networking issue of some sort.

Are you using wireless on the computer that is attempting to access mediaBrowser? If so, some wireless routers have a setting that blocks wireless users from accessing other devices on the network. Can the computer see anything else on your network?

Re: Connection has timed out

Both computers are hardlined directly to my whole network switch. Both computers can ping each other. This is a domain set up. I can also see my laptop and access it's shared hard drive and it's on wireless. But the laptop has nothing to do with this. The TV is hardlined as well.

Re: Connection has timed out

The Java is immaterial, as Serviio installs its own JVM.

It sounds like you've taken the most likely steps to resolve the issue. My next suggestion is to uninstall Serviio, reboot, make sure the installation folder is gone, then perform a clean Serviio install. Just sounds like something during install didn't work right. Running an a domain shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Connection has timed out

I'll try that and let you know. Should I go ahead and uninstall both versions of Java as well just to be on the safe side? And any other things I need to uninstall for a totally clean uninstall. It still shows about my week of Pro remaining

Re: Connection has timed out

Your Java installation doesn't really matter, as Serviio does not use any JVM other than the one it installs itself. If you have anything else that needs Java, you don't want to uninstall all versions. If you use Filebot to name your files, it uses Java.

Re: Connection has timed out

I only installed Java cuz I read that Serviio uses it so I wasn't sure if it would help or not so I'll get rid of it. How do i make sure I completely cleaned up the Serviio installation?

Re: Connection has timed out

After the uninstall, make sure the C:\Program files\Serviio folder is completely gone. Then reboot to make sure something wasn't hanging on for dear life. Now re-install.

Re: Connection has timed out

I just uninstalled Java, both x86 and x64, and made sure Serviio was completely gone. I even checked the firewall to make sure the rules were gone. After a clean reinstall after a reboot, I still cannot access the server outside of the local machine. The only thing I have not checked is if my failover network card configuration is the cause. I am going to see if that is my issue.

Re: Connection has timed out

Thats exactly what it was. Serviio does not like NIC Teaming. I removed the 2 cards from NIC Teaming and it immediately connected and ran perfectly.

Re: Connection has timed out

So here is the solution when running Windows Server with NIC Teaming. Disable the NIC Teaming and go under the Network Adapters and create a Bridged Connection for your Failover instead of NIC Teaming. I am using Windows Server 2012 R2 with dual NICS. I can stream videos both Wirelessly and On LAN and the stream will not get interrupted even if one NIC dies or one of the 2 links goes down.

Re: Connection has timed out

I'm not familiar with NIC teaming, so never considered a NIC issue. Glad you discovered the issue, and thanks for sharing your results. That might assist another user in the future. :D

It does make me ask one additional question. Under NIC Teaming, is there a single IP address to the "team", or does each NIC have its own IP address? Serviio can only bind to a single NIC (with one IP address), so perhaps the original install was binding to one NIC but your network was connecting via the other NIC on a different IP address. That would absolutely cause the problem you were having.

EDIT: I just did a quick look-see at NIC Teaming, and I think the IP address issue was likely the problem. Your network IP address was probably not the same IP address Serviio was bound to (wrong NIC). I need to remember to ask about multiple NICs the next time I see someone using Windows Server.

Re: Connection has timed out

NIC Teaming is essentially the same as bridging except evidently it uses different drivers. NIC teaming can be used to connect the server to 2 separate switches or can be used as a failover where both nics have the exact same information as each other but if one goes down the network is not interrupted. Why NIC teaming fails but bridging works I do not know. Both methods are using the same general idea.

Re: Connection has timed out

Bridging should either use the same IP address across both devices, or act as the name implies and just let every packet on one NIC be visible on the other NIC. In Team mode, my guess is Serviio was bound to one NIC and your network was on the other. The important thing is you have it working now, and we all learned something new. That makes it a great day! :D
