DTS Streaming

Hello,

I know that this is probably a ffmpeg question, but I am unable to find an answer on their website or anywhere else.

I know that Serviio (via ffmpeg) converts DTS to AC3 (Dolby Digital).

Is there a way to have Serviio send the DTS stream without converting it to AC3 ?

Thanks

sure. it does it if the device supports it. All part of profile config.

Hello,

I am using a Sony SMP-N100 and it supports DTS - the audio is DTS if I play the video from a USB portable Drive.

How would I go about setting it so that DTS is not converted to AC3?

Keep up the Wonderful Work... :)

Thanks

Hello Cerberus,

I understand that the USB and DLNA server are two different systems.

I was just asking to know if there is a way to have the server in this case Serviio stream DTS without converting it to AC3.

Zip says that Serviio can be set to stream DTS without converting it to AC3 in the profile config.

I assumed that he was talking about the profile config of my device which is the Sony SMP-N100 not that I would know where to go and how to modify that config.

Thanks

the device does NOT support DTS over DLNA so it has to be converted.

Cerberus,

Thank you for that information.

By the way, where did you find that information?

I have been trying to find all the Specs on the Sony MP devices, but their website is lacking a lot of details.

Thanks

ask patters, he created the player profile and probably knows why DTS is converted to AC3.

If you look at this
http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=dev ... at_support

You will see that the device only supports:
http-get:*:audio/L16:DLNA.ORG_PN=LPCM;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=9d700000000000000000000000000000,
http-get:*:audio/mpeg:DLNA.ORG_PN=MP3;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=9d700000000000000000000000000000,
http-get:*:audio/x-ms-wma:DLNA.ORG_PN=WMABASE;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=9d700000000000000000000000000000

But you can force serviio to use "Generic Profile" and try to stream a DTS audio file.

If I get time I will retry...

The device definitely does support DTS over DLNA. However FFmpeg (even v0.9) seems to do something wrong when remuxing DTS and corrupts it. And we need to remux from mp4/mkv to m2ts on Sony BDP/SMP for other reasons (wifi performance, and ffwd/rew/pause-resume), which is why the device profile goes for AC-3.

If you really want DTS, then I suggest using TSMuxer to manually remux your file to m2ts before adding the file to your library. TSMuxer does correctly remux DTS streams without corrupting them.

Hi Narutoaustx

I can see that you are using a Sony SMP-N100, does you have any problems with streaming feeds, like the screen goes pink or black and the unit restarts?

Hello Illico and everyone,

Thanks for the information that you have provided. It has been very helpful.

Sorry, I have been occupied with other matters and have not been checking the forum.

Illico,

When I try and force Serviio to use generic for the Sony MP-N100, not all of my files play correctly.

When I connect via USB, Sony would always complain "audio format not supported" if the audio is DTS. However, it would output audio as DTS and plays fine through my receiver.

Also, I note that when the DTS audio is converted to AC3 (Dolby Digital) by Serviio it is of lower bit rate 320Kbps as opposed to 640Kbps which results in decreased audio fidelity as compared to the 640Kbps.

Is there a way to have the DTS converted using 640Kbps?

Thanks in advance... :D

Hello Larzendk,

Sorry, I had been away from the Forum for a bit.

I had occasionally encountered that problem with certain files played through Serviio; those same files would crash my Sony when I play it through the USB port.

However, those files would play fine with VLC player on my computer.

I decided to reprocess those files (resulting in loss of quality :( ) but then it would play fine through Serviio / USB.

I have no clue as to why that happens. Those original files would play without any problem on my friend's Netgear Neo (?) player.

Guess it's a problem with the Sony MP-N100. BTW, I live in the US and apparently there are differences in HW / SW in the device depending on regions..

Any insight?

I have been meaning to sit down and prepare a couple of sample remux clips - one with TSMuxer the other with FFmpeg, then send them to the FFmpeg mailing list so they can fix this. Soon...

Ok, I have made my test clips. However, I now need to compile the latest version of FFmpeg before I can submit the bug report...

I finally finally got around to opening a ticket:
