VLC as DLNA player

I was looking for a Windows XP DLNA media player without success, only XMBC was suggested which was more than I needed. However a I have discovered that VLC version 2 can work as a DLNA / UPnP on Windows / Linux (I have not tested it on MacOs X.)

It quite easy, just choose View --> Playlist -->Local Network -->Universal Plug’n Play., then you will find the Servio Server and all your folders.

A picture is worth a thousand words:

This works great except it doesn't seem to play any live video streams.

Update 3/11/12 - This does pickup some live streams that I've tried. Great find! It even plays live streams that XBMC doesn't play. :D

Doesn't seem to work for VLC 2.0 on Mac :( Are there any other DLNA clients for Mac?

Edit: Nevermind, it does seem to work, but it took very long to discover Serviio.

if you are going to play movies through PC/mac, why not use network shares? That is much faster and will support any format that your media player supports?

The only reason I can think of for using DLNA player through a Pc/mac is for testing purposes?

One other benefit of VLC is that you will be able to select the media using the Metadata that has been downloaded for it, as opposed to the directory structure / file structure of the fie system where the files are stored.

oh yeah...didn't thought of that. Still, would rather use conventional method for watching videos online or offline if using pc/mac. DLNA technology is not there yet to take over such method.

Wow!! Really nice find!! :D

I just happen to Google "Windows DNLA video player" and found this post! :)
Zip is there any chance you can change "Windows Media Player" to "VLC Media Player" when it detects VLC?

It's probably Windows Media Player that gets detected. I only support 1 device per IP so the last that connects to Serviio is the one in the list. You'd have to disable media sharing in Windows to get rid of WMP.

I can't seem to get any further than the Serviio Icon appearing in VLC... no folders, flies, etc. are visible.
I know Serviio is working 'cause I can access my media on my WDTV Live and Integra AV amplifier.

What am I doing wrong?

VLC is slow to get the info. Just click on Serviio and wait a few minutes. The list of folders should appear.

Thanks for that... yes it works!

You would think that with all the processing power of a modern PC that this might be a little quicker?

Thanks for the input guys!

The reason it is so slow is that VLC requests information about EVERY folder/virtual folder and its contents in on go, rather than requesting it as it is needed. This is tbh a really poor implementation as it makes it very slow, is unneeded as its unlikely that the user would want to look at every folder, and means you have to restart VLC if you add any new files.

Try to give the IP where your VLC is running a Vier profile, or wdtv. The generic profile has no subtitles.
