Wireless Question (Can Stream 1080p But Not Serviio)

I am a new user to Serviio, so this might truly be a NOOB question! :)

I have been having issues trying to get video files from my desktop to my SONY BD player. (BDP-S590) I am trying to play AVI files recorded on my camera, and currently residing on a desktop. They also do not play on my XBOX in the same location as the BD.

1. The original setup was desktop and BD both wireless. This resulted in terrible choppiness and stuttering.

2. I added a new wireless router (Linksys) in addition to my FIOS router because I heard the FIOS router had bad throughput. This did nothing.

3. I hardwired the desktop to the router. Slightly better, but the files were still stopping all the time.

4. On a whim, I decided to convert some AVI files to MPGs. They then played flawlessly. (They went from, say 25MB to say 5MB.)

5. I used my work laptop on the same hardwired connection. It was able to play the AVI files with no problems. I figured that the desktop (since it is very old) was having trouble converting the AVIs on the fly, and that is the issue. (Is this a correct assumption? It is a very old desktop.)

6. I undid the hardwire (not feasible for my location) and tried everything again.

7. It is back to nothing working. Neither the desktop nor laptop.

I understand it is something with the wireless. However, I am able to stream 1080p movies from VUDU to the BD player without as much a hiccup. I get about 4.5 Mbps throughput on the BD. The desktop is 50% closer and gets even better throughput.

Any thoughts on where to go from here?

Possibly, if the file was being transcoded and not just remuxed. Depends on the profile and file type.

4.5MBit seems very low to me, especially for HD. Hardwired gets 100MBit or 1GBit, just to compare. So that might be your problem.

Re: Wireless Question (Can Stream 1080p But Not Serviio)

Thanks for the quick response.

VUDU streams 1080p HDX (they call it HDX ... their HD is 720p) at 4 Mbps and above. On my player it streams with no interruptions and looks great. (And is really in 1080p.)

The thing is ... these files are not really that big. Most of the MPGs I am trying to stream are less than 10 MB in size.

Doesn't it seem like that should be able to stream at that bandwidth?

you can check the detailed log to see if the file is transcoded, in which case the slow CPU might be your bottleneck

This is also happening with straight MPGs which work perfectly fine when the computer is hardwired.

I don't want to monopolize all your time ... just thought maybe I was missing something.

in that case it's probably the wifi. Check the channel it's on, might be high traffic from your neighbours. try pinging the player from the serviio box (ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and check what it the network latency (ms)

Check this thread http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2439 Try that tool and find a channel that is not in use by neighbors.

I ran the wireless checking tools. There are only 3 wireless things in range, and they all are on different channels.

Here is the ping info from the wireless Serviio box to the wireless BD player. Looks pretty fast to me.
