Serviio and Now TV Box (Roku)

Just curious as to if anyone has used Serviio server to stream to the Now TV Box (rebranded roku)

I know you can side load on plex and stream from that but is there anyway to do it woth serviio?

Thanks!

Never heard of the Now box, but there is a Roku channel that will work with Serviio. It's called Chaneru, and overall handles things real well. If your videos are in MP4 format, the Roku plays them native and Serviio does not transcode. Everything else will be transcoded, and Serviio 1.3 has a minor bug with playing the entire length of the movie. However, Zip has it fixed with Serviio 1.4, and that should be released before Christmas.

If the Now TV Box can use standard Roku channels, you might try Chaneru. My only issues have been with HD video, as the Roku will choke on bit rates that get too high. Most play fine, but there are a few that the Roku can't keep up with.

this is the now tv box

i'll have a look in to that app, but may just go for a Pi instead as it can support 1080p at high bit rates.

thanks,

Ah, that's why I hadn't heard of it. UK only. I'm in the states.

I've briefly looked at the Pi boards, but am unsure what OS and applications they would run. Guess that means I haven't look very close

Re: Serviio and Now TV Box (Roku)

I was looking at this today, Now TV Box is just a rehash or Roku LT - http://www.roku.com/uk/choose-your-roku
But it runs Sky's own version of Roku's OS with limited apps

Now TV Box is really cheap @£9.99 when the Roku LT Box is about £30+

Since theres no custom app like Plex for Serviio to sideload. Unless it supports streaming DLNA videos
Sony Bravia 2010 52NX803 - Sony PS3 - Xbox 360
Serviio running on QNAP NAS 639 Pro - 1.6 Intel Dual Core - 2GB RAM and QNAP NAS 121 - 2Ghz ARM Marvell - 1GB RAM
Console using ServiiDroid for Android, ServiiMetro and ServiiWP for Windows Phone and WebUI for iOS

I have side loaded Plex on to it but haven't had a chance to try Chaneru

Will try over the weekend / early next week and get back to you. I imagine videos will have to be trans coded down from 1080p but for the price it isn't a half bad option

I found the following eBook from Amazon very helpful 'The Practical Guide To Making Your 'Dumb' TV A 'Smarter' TV for Under a Tenner Using A NOW TV Box', it demonstrates streaming network content to a NOW TV/ Roku Box using Serviio.

Can the Now Box load normal Roku channels? If so, Roku has released a new media player that supports DLNA.

Re: Serviio and Now TV Box (Roku)

Yes you can sideload Plex but the box itself will not let you load standard roku channels, save your money and get a proper Roku, I have a Roku XS and a NOW TV box and the now tv box is quite good value for what it is but does not compare with a real Roku box which is now useable with Serviio (DLNA) with mp4, mp3 and jpeg files.
I find Plex to be a bit unreliable too.

The now tv box in its present form is no good for streaming at all, buy a real Roku instead. :D

Re: Serviio and Now TV Box (Roku)

Hi,

Just bought myself a Now TV box today and installed mediabrowser3 but struggling to get it to see my Serviio NAS....

I see mediabrowser3 does a server component but don't want to go to the trouble of installing that on my NAS as well...

Has anyone used mediabrowser3 before to see Serviio or UPNP / DLNA before?

Regards,

Dave.

What is this media player called? I'll see if I can sideload it like plex
