Serviio disconnects after more than a year without problems

Hi all, my first post here.

I've been using Serviio for more than a year without any problem until a few days ago when Serviio started to disconnect after almost every watched wideo or during browsing the library or when just idle.

I read though all of the messages regarding this issue but didn't find the solution. I did not make any changes in my network, I am still using the same PC (Windows), the same router (TG 782) and the same TV (LG 42LB650V). I am surprised everything worked without an issue even when I did not have opened UDP 1900&TCP 8895 ports!? Now when Serviio started to disconnect I opened these ports but it did not solve the problem :-/ I even tried to disable the firewall but still the same.

Sometimes Serviio reconnects after restarting the Serviio service but sometimes it doesn't. It does not disconnect during watching the movie but it does if I stop the movie and try to browse the files.

My router is in semi bridge mode (*) and the connection is innitiated by PC through PPPoE (dial-up). When Serviio disconnects the TV can still access internet without problems.

It is very annoying going to the other room to restart the Serviio service everytime I want to use DLNA, not to say I sometimes have to spend 10-15 minutes to get DLNA back. As I said, everything worked without a problem for more than a year and I have no clue what could have triggered the issue. I can see (from the forum posts) the problem persists for quite a few years and I see there are problems with some routers, UPnP or TCP/UDP ports but the router I am using worked just fine and I tried everything regarding UPnP and the ports.

I am using wired connection so there isn't a problem with the wifi.

I am sure I am not the only one with the same problem and will appreciate any help.

I still didn't enable the debug log level to see if there is some information that could help, if I find something that might be useful I wil post the update.

(*)
When the internet connection is innitiated by PC then all devices in network (laptop, TV, Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi PC, phones, ...) access internet through gateway which is IP address of the PC (also DNS IP address) but the router can innitiate the connection even by itself in which case the gateway and DNS IP address has to be the IP address of the router.

Re: Serviio disconnects after more than a year without probl

Ideas:
  • Debug log :-)
  • PC isn't going to (any level of) sleep is it?
  • Bind your server to the IP address of the PC (if not already)
  • Ensure Windows Media Player service is set to start automatically (haven't got to the bottom of this one, but it has helped others)
ps. I've never had to open ports - I think its a linux thing. It wont be ports anyway - that's either a connect or no-connect issue - this is more likely to be a renewal of the advertising (SSDP) issue (or PC sleeping).

Hi,

thank you for the reply! I am still investigating debug log(s) to find something that could help. PC isn't going to sleep and I tried to change 'Bound IP address' from Automatic to actual IP address of the PC but everything remained the same.

I do not see Windows Media Player Service anywhere among services and I am quite sure it never existed.

TV's firmware is not the cause because I disabled automatic firmware updates. The same is with the router - internet provider couldn't upload a new firmware because I removed remote administrator from user.ini a long time ago meaning the setup is exactly the same as when everything worked OK :-/

I will be researching this until I find the cause of the problem because I'd really like to know what's going on.

I have finally isolated the exact moment when the Serviio icon disappears from the TV but unfortunatelly there is nothing logged in the .log file when disconnect happens :-/ Here is the excerpt from the .log file:

Re: Serviio disconnects after more than a year without probl

What version of Windows? On Win 7 & 10, it is labeled Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Unless you've intentionally uninstalled it from the Control Panel, it's there by default on all Windows installations. Now with XP, I can't be certain it's there, and what it might be named.

Yes, I am using an old Windows XP PC for streaming the media. But I didn't uninstall anything since I installed Serviio and the disconnect problem started just a few days ago.

Re: Serviio disconnects after more than a year without probl

OK, with XP only the Media Center version came with built-in DLNA functionality.

Honestly, you really should update your OS to at least Windows 7. XP is no longer supported, so there are no more security patches available. Don't settle for Vista. While it's the next version from XP, it is slower on the same hardware as 7, and not as well supported.

As to your problem, being on XP might just be the issue. Zip might weigh in here, but it's possible that there are features now available that don't play nice with XP. Just a guess about that, but who knows? :?

Oh, and what version of Serviio are you using???

I know everything about the vulnerabilities, it's a long story but not only i still need XP - I need XP SP2 :-)) I did not intentionally tell it is an XP machine right away, because a lot of people would just say: 'It is because of XP', that is why I am repeating the fact 'everything worked without problems for more than a year until a few days ago and there were no any changes regarding PC, TV, router and network settings from the time everything was OK'. Even the Serviio version is the same as from the very first day. I installed it on Dec 09, 2015. and I still have the install file - it is version 1.5.2 and I did not update it because I didn't want to change/break the version that was proven to work :-) I suspected the newer versions might have problems with such an old OS so I wanted to keep the one that works.

Now when DLNA started to disconnect I did not update Serviio to the latest version because I am really curious what is causing the issue. There must be at least one thing that changed compared to when everything worked OK and I'd really like to isolate the cause. It is not the matter of having DLNA anymore, I am now taking it more as a challenge :-)

Re: Serviio disconnects after more than a year without probl

And a challenge it might be!

I completely understand the occasional need to keep using older OSs. I'm still on Windows 7 with my HTPC because I can't find anything to replace Windows Media Center. Kodi doesn't provide the movie guide I use constantly.

The first thing you have to accept is that something must have changed. Was it on your computer, or network? Hard to say from here. I don't know what Windows Update still does on an XP machine, but it's possible that something was installed. Look at the WU history to see if anything was updated around the date you began having problems.

Perhaps your ISP pushed an update to your Internet connection device. Some ISPs will do that, others won't. Any firmware update could alter settings that interfere with your internal network.

Just a couple of ideas to explore.

Greater challenge --> greater satisfaction after finding the solution :-)

That is not the case. I am using old toolchains for microcontroller firmware develompment (obsolete GCC compiler versions, obsolete AVR Studio, ...), obsolete software for programming microcontrollers and obsolete software for controlling CNC machines - some of these don't work even with SP3 or newer .dll libraries, that is why I disabled all of updates.

Not possible, as I already said before: "TV's firmware is not the cause because I disabled automatic firmware updates. The same is with the router - internet provider couldn't upload a new firmware because I removed remote administrator from user.ini a long time ago meaning the setup is exactly the same as when everything worked OK.".

I did that because I unlocked the LAN ports initially used for IPTV so I disabled the remote FW uploading to prevent ISP from overwriting my changes.

Thank you very much for your suggestions! I will keep trying to find out what is the reason for disconnecting. I wonder if network traffic captured by Wireshark could give some useful information.

Re: Serviio disconnects after more than a year without probl

Just to add one more information:

The other DLNA software (LG Smart Share) is still working without an issue. Whatever changed since when everything was OK, it caused an issue with Serviio only.

(I installed LG Smart Share on Dec 09, 2015. which is one day after I installed Serviio)
