Which format for optimal playback? (Bravia)

Hiya,

I just got a new Bravia and Serviio is working great with my mp4 and my mkv files. There doesn't seem so be much real transcoding going on, just remuxing.

Question 1:
I'd like to know more about DLNA formats such as AVC_TS_MP_HD_AC3, AVC_TS_HD_50_AC3_T, etc. I know there are hundreds of combinations. Where can I learn how to decode these strings and learn more? What's the difference between AVC_TS_HD_50_AC3_T and AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3 for example? Is that h264 level 5.0 and... 6.0 what ever that is?

Question 2:
When encoding my DVDs and BluRays, what settings should I choose for best playback? I know this is a huge question and device specific but where so I start? I was targeting AppleTV with increased quality (constant = RF19.25) before but now I'm thinking of re-encode with my Bravia as target, either the BluRay player or the TV itself. This means I need an AC3 audio stream and an AVC/h264 stream but what kind of limits does the Bravia have? Can I glean that from the GetProtocolInfo format strings (see Question 1)?

Cheers and big thanks!
Mattias

Those are part of the DLNA spec, you can get one on DLNA home page (although you might have to pay for it if you don't work for one of the listed companies).

The difference between AVC_TS_HD_50_AC3_T and AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3_T is the frame rate (50 interlaced, 60 interlaced)

I would said the best Bravia Profile is:
AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3 or AVC_TS_HD_50_AC3 : This is an up to 1920x1080 h264 video (AVC or MPEG4 part 10, Main Profile or High Profile Level 4.1), with Dolby AC3 Audio 5.1 channel
Maximum video bitrate seems to be 20mbps or 30Mbps according to video codec profile
Bravia TV doesn't support H264 Level > 4.1
60/50 seems to referred to frame rate 25fps / 30fps

There were also the AVC_TS_HD_24_AC3 profile same for 24/23.976 fps

Re: Which format for optimal playback? (Bravia)

Perfect info, thanks both of you.

Related to the 24/50/60 in AVC_TS_HD_xx_AC: is the "xx" the *maximum* frame rate then?

I'm assuming this is the case since I've tested my own DVD rips which are 24fps (23.xxx) and most of my downloaded 720p TV episodes are too. They all work fine although the profile seems like Serviio is hardcoding all the AVC_TS_MP_HD_AC3 streams to the Bravia as AVC_TS_HD_50_AC3? Should I up my own profile to AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3 to allow 30fps streams?

Illico, it seems like you have a similar setup. maybe i'll just get a Sony BluRay player and make it easier. It seems to support AVC_TS_MP_HD_AC3 natively. maybe i'll just treat the TV as a dumb display and make the BluRay player the client? What setup do you have?

Cheers,
Mattias

Re: Which format for optimal playback? (Bravia)

Most of the time the players don't really care about the profile name, main is the mime-type of the content. It seems though that Sony actually cares, that's why in the Sony profile you can find renaming of profiles that Serviio supports (and are similar) to those that the Sony TV requires.

So to answer your question, I think you can advertise a 30fps video as 50i or 24 fps and the TV will most likely not mind.

I don't think this is a "maximum" frame rate.
But sorry, I don't know how sony firmware arrange the video stream according to the profile frame rate (24/50/60) and real embedded frame rate 23.xxx/24/25/30 fps.

Zek wrote:Should I up my own profile to AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3 to allow 30fps streams?

You can change the Sony Profile with other AVC_TS_HD_60_AC3 or AVC_TS_HD_24_AC3 profiles, I already test this function on the 0.4.2 beta and did not see difference.
You could check that if you get time.

As Zip mention, "the players don't care about the profile name, main is the mime-type of the content"...
Mostly, I use the TV's renderer, because TV provide Thumbnails (not BDP player)...with Serviio and Buffalo network folders shared, all are hard wire 100Mbps.
Sometime for Video with DTS audio, I use the BDP player with the 0.5 beta...
