Do i need MPEG2 and VC-1 licenses on raspberry pi

Hi. I am using my Raspberry pi as a media server and Sony Bravia TV for display and videos work fine(Except some HD MKV files which displays no video but has audio).
However, the pi seems to be using its entire resources and stops responding when video transcoding is going on.
I have not purchased MPEG2 and VC-1 codec licenses yet as Serviio seems to be doing its job well.
Will it help to purchase them? Does Serviio detect licenses and uses hardware transcoding(or is it doing it from the start)?
Will it help to shift transcoding load to GPU freeing the CPU?
Also will it help with the MKV files on my Sony Bravia?

Thanks in advance for the responses. :D
