DVD to MKV using Handbrake

I have been trying to use Handbrake to create MKV files from DVD but I can not get the settings correct. Keep getting file corrupt or unsupported error. Below is my equipment / software setup. Can someone confirm if Handbrake can be used and what the optimial / correct settings are. Also if there is an alternative FREEWARE application that I can use that might be better / easier. Thanks...

Serviio Version: 0.5.2
Blu-ray player(s): Sony 570 / Samsung 5500/6500
Handbrake: 0.9.5

Thanks...

I just used Handbrake a couple of days ago to convert to a MP4 using the built in High Profile with no problems and great results.

Illico - I have tried normal / high and various other profiles at default settings and with various customizations with no joy. I was more looking for specific settings that might be needed to be set or verified as set to insure compatablity.

moltra - I will try the mp4 extension as I have not really tried it. Also which OS are you using (Windows / Linux / ?)

As I am not versed in transcoding / encoding please verify that my basic understanding is correct;

- mkv / mp4 are just 'containers' or wrappers that carry the encoded video / audio data streams
- once the container is opened it exposes the encoded data streams which are sent natively if device supported or transcoded into a understandable format for the device.

My suspicion, from my research, is that it is the libs that are being used to encode the data streams that are not supported or need additional configurations. However from moltra's comments this would / could be not true.

I used windows that time. I can try with Linux tonight if you want me to.

follow the instructions in this thread on the video that you created.
http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1123

this will show us what the underlaying streams are.

Yes you are correct the MP4 is just the container.

If you look at http://www.videohelp.com they have alot of great links and guides on how to do this.

Problem is due to Handbrake encoding options used, not serviio.
Serviio simply remux video and audio in another container (mpegts), video/audio encoding and timestamp are provided by Handbrake. Look at Handbrake forum.

The weird thing is, I used a video converter named "iSkysoft" to convert DVD to MKV before updating to Serviio 0.5.2, and they were pretty good to stream from Serviio to my SONY BDP, but no more MKV files being able to stream after updating Serviio 0.5.2, no matter what video converter I used (iSkysoft, Handbrake, Freemake). I am not blaming Serviio, I just don't know why and wanted to solve the problem.

OK.
Do you modify the Sony BDP profile 0.5.2?
Do you still have the profile used before updating to 0.5.2 version?

No, i didn't modify both the 0.5.1 & 0.5.2 profiles, but you get me to the point, so i tried to restore the profiles.xml to previous version, unfortunately, it still failed to stream.

Well, do you read this topic about Sony BDP profile details: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2004
You could try with the last section example by removing mkv remux option and play natively.

I did not get a chance to check my handbrake last night, I will check tonight and will export my handbrake profile.
