Image transcoding

I have been using Serviio for almost a year very successfully. I have upgraded to version 1.6 and now a registered user.

I am having difficulty with understanding profiles generally.
1. Firstly, is there a comprehensive manual or tutorial that describes profiles and transcoding.
2. I have a problem with the WD TV Media Player (and other devices) on Images because of the high resolution of current images e.g.4288x3216 as the WD TV Media Player max is 2048x2048. Creating a temporary folder with images converted manually to 2048x2048 overcomes the problem. Therefore I would like to transcode the size to a max size using a profile. (note. other WD TV boxes have a different, i.e. lower, specification).
