[Solved] Wireless extender issue Serviio server (Roku SS)

So I bought a Roku streaming stick for my older Vizio in the kitchen. I'm using wireless extender from my 2nd to the 1st floor with minimum 145mbps connection.

So, my Nighthawk X8 main router on the first floor is also the DHCP server for IP. The wireless extender attaches to the X8 to complete the wireless to upstairs. The Serviio server is on the 2nd floor. The TV downstairs picks it up just fine and works flawlessly, the 2nd tv upstairs connects to the 2nd floor side....it works perfect.

The Roku when I connect it to the first floor side, can't find the serviio server at all via the media server app in it, but if I tell it to connect to the 2nd floor side (even with a weak signal) it can find and stream from that side.

So I'm confused as to what the issue might be. I have uPNP activated in the X8 router and everything works in the current config minus the streaming stick.

Any idea what I'm missing here? If the TV didn't connect, I'd say its a wireless problem, or a router problem, but the fact that everything is working but that.......I can't seem to figure out why the streaming stick can't find it via the X8 1st floor entry point to the wireless network.

Does your router support 5 GHz wireless? I find the Roku Stick works much better on the 5 GHz band compared to 2.4 GHz. Most likely because the 2.4 band is far more crowded. I connect my TV to my 5 GHz box, even though there's a 2.4 box much closer.

Another possibility. Some wireless router and access points have a setting that blocks devices that connect wirelessly from viewing anything else on the network. It's usually used as a guest mode to let people connect without granting access to anything on your network. No idea if your extender has such a function, but check its settings to be sure.

I did check both but what is very strange is that the TV in the kitchen should follow the same routing as the TV on the first floor.....and that is where the hang up is.

The access point is a WN3000RP.

It is set up as an access point and has been this way for about two years with no change in configuration, so I know it is "stable".

My laptop uses the same "path" X8 > WN3000RP to see my other servers mapped drives (not serviio related)....so the link is solid/valid.....

Since the Roku can see the WN3000RP and pull from it and stream from it, I'm vexed to why the X8 to WN3000RP path link doesn't allow it to work correctly.

I could setup the guest network, but I'm not a fan of that....if uPNP is enabled, shouldn't it not matter?

OK, I just downloaded the manual for your extender, and it doesn't appear to have any sort of controls for IGMP or multicast, so let's assume that it passes everything. I am assuming you have an SSID that differs from your primary router, as that is the recommended configuration. I am also assuming you have access control disabled on both the extender and the router, and do not have an access schedule set up.

I noticed that the extender can also be configured as an access point. This requires an Ethernet connection to your primary router. Any chance you can try that? I have two access points in my home connected to my home network, and have no difficulty connecting to Serviio with Roku devices or other wireless clients.

I found that the setting was located in the WAN section of the router menus......I disabled it and then the ROKU started seeing the server, so that is a good start.

I was able to stream 480 and 720 content, but it chokes on anything 1080p......

It is on the 2.4 channel and that has a 1Gb connection side wireless, so that isn't the issue and I've done a BW stream test and it is shoveling almost the 145mbps the extender is reporting, so it's not a BW wireless issue and the tv streams 1080 material all day long.

I'm not sure how to deal with the ROKU at this point for this issue as most of my content is 1080p.

I also have a chromecast 1 and tried it with bubble uPnP and having the same issue.....all 1080 chokes and 720 below is ok.

Am I missing something here?

Congrats!, Good news

From now, it will be harder I think....
Althought it seems you have enough BW to stream it, perhaps you should review the quality and latency (could become chockes on router side).
Why not?:
- Approach review of "buffer" and "cpu" related parms (Airtime Fairness - suggest off, Tx Burst - suggest off, etc...). Also to close config to needs (N only and non compat, Fix channel to a lower and free as you can).
- Try, to be sure of your wireless environment, downstairs serviio to plug it to X8 with ethernet and be sure you have all the BW (you are sharing) for roku as a test. By this way you will limit where the bottleneck is and will be sure you are not having quality problems with BW (latency and buffer chokes is a different point).

Just took a look and I'll be damned, the wireless link took a dump, it was linked at 7mbps and the light was red, typically always green. I changed the channel from auto to ch1 fixed and the link locked back to 144mpbs, its an n300 but in access mode seems to halve to 145, who knows why, the link status is now 144mbps and fluctuating between 144 to 130 steady now......just streamed some 1080 content including large movie mp4s and its running without a hitch.......

For those having a similar issue......makes sure the IGMP setting is turned off (in this case a ROKU STREAMING STICK circa Sept 2017) even if your not using external access to your server and make sure your wireless really is working as you expect it to be.

Another lesson learned and I am changing thread title to solved.

Fantastic!, the most important is you have it working

Would like to answer your thought: Witn N300, you will get a maximun of 150mbps of link in the best scenario (theoric) due to channel BW (20MHz). With that in mind, and taking into account what you have, try 40MHz per channel in your config -repeater and X8- (if you are getting up to 145mbps seems that your radioelectric spectrum is fairly clean!, so probably you can improve your link).

Another question, as I shared on another post (http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24006#p115115), try -I did- to:
- update external jar files (serviio/lib) to () the last ones [just replace with same name]:
- httpclient-cache.jar (http://central.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/httpcomponents/httpclient-cache/4.5.3/httpclient-cache-4.5.3.jar)
- httpclient.jar (http://central.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/httpcomponents/httpclient/4.5.3/httpclient-4.5.3.jar)
- httpcore.jar (http://central.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/httpcomponents/httpcore/4.4.6/httpcore-4.4.6.jar)
- set -Dserviio.socketBuffer=262143 (and try as option -Dserviio.useNetworkTOS=true, depends on your HW) to java options
For me increased a lot the performance! (serviio is running flawlessly )

Terrific! It's amazing where some settings are hidden, and I'm glad you found it in the router. good job adding solved to the title, as that is a great help for other users. I know you shouldn't have had a problem with 1080 on the Stick. I stream 1080 to mine all the time.

Thanks for the kudos....I'm still new to the streaming thing for the house, my digital life has been a mess, when I got my new TV, it just all started to make sense....so between organizing and executing, it's been a small learning curve....we are well on our way now.....
