Cannot see online content

Hi,
I have just installed Serviio plus the plugins package. I am using it with my Ellion HMR-600 mediaserver and it works fine for local content. The Ellion plays just about all formats, by the way, so transcoding isn't needed. First of all, the YouTube plugin doesn't seem to work.

When I add RSS feeds from the Danish national TV, DR1, no files are shown (just the folder), even though the media files are clearly listed in the XML file as MP4 files. Why cannot Serviio see those? Examples are found at http://www.dr.dk/podcast/Video. For Danish TV2 I do get a list of broadcasts, but they are all the same and are played with sound only. I used this feed: http://nyhederne.tv2.dk/rss/nyhederne_p ... /index.xml.

In the plugin implementation guide I read: "For each feed which needs a plugin Serviio tries to match all available plugins to the feed's URL by calling this method and uses the first plugin that returns true." That does not sound like a good method to pick the correct plugin.

Online feeds are really the only things I need Serviio for, as the Ellion box can access the local content on my PC directly via Samba. I would guess that this is true for lots of mediaplayer boxes. So, the focus of mediaserver programs should be online content. IMHO there are no good mediaservers for online content yet. I have tried 5 or 6 so far. The one that works best is PlayOn, but it is not free. Perhaps Serviio can be improved, so that it can compete? I hope so.

Serviio already beats all other media servers hands down for all types of content be it local or online and will be even better when next release comes out in next few weeks (no confirmed date)

if your feed require a plugin you can request it in the relevent forum section, or create your own.

Re: Cannot see online content

Hi Cerberus,
I look forward to your new release and I suggest you try to add this online content before you release it: http://vpodcast.dr.dk/feeds/aftenshowetrss.xml. Currently Serviio cannot find the MP4 files in this RSS feed. However, I made en experiment. I edited the file and uploaded it to my own website (at http://www.ullerup.com/files/aftenshowet.xml) and now it can find the video files. This leads me to suggest the following for the new release:

It would be nice if it was possible to add an online feed as a local file. Currently Serviio won't allow it as it is considered an illegal URL. Allowing this would be a great advantage. First of all you could edit problematic RSS feeds and add the edited file right from your local hard drive. Secondly you could prepare your own XML feed files including links to various media files on the net, with your own titles. Such XML files have a very simple format and can easily be written in a text editor. You can start with my file at http://www.ullerup.com/files/aftenshowet.xml as an example. In this way I have also fixed the problems with the TV2 RSS feed where all titles are listed as identical. The fix can be found at http://www.ullerup.com/files/nyhederTV2.xml. The missing sound is due to a problem with their MP4 files, by the way.

With regard to your blanket statement, that Serviio beats all other mediaservers hands down, this is certainly not true when compared with PlayOn, where you have access to a long list of online services including Hulu and Netflix, and where YouTube works. But perhaps you mean free mediaservers. In any case, I believe Serviio has the potential to become one of the best with the development of more plugins. If you could also allow the addition of online content via a local XML file as suggested above, it would be a major advantage.

Re: Cannot see online content - update

Hi Phil,
I have now installed the new version 0.6.1 including the plugins package, and YouTube now works! This is great as you can easily create YouTube RSS feeds of your choice from the instructions at http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/2.0 ... feeds.html or http://toolkit.snd.org/tools/video/yout ... generator/. The new version still cannot find the video files in http://vpodcast.dr.dk/feeds/aftenshowetrss.xml and local XML files still cannot be added. I didn't expect this as my proposal was too late for the new version. Accepting a local XML file as an online source is a minor change, however, so I would like to propose it for update 0.6.1.1. Writing a groovy plugin is too difficult for the average user, but writing an RSS-style XML file is quite easy. This would allow the average user to establish online playlists in the form of local XML files.

At the moment this can be done only by uploading the XML files to a website, but this is an unnecessary step, and a step that some users without a website may find difficult. Here is a relatively easy way to do it: You can upload your XML files to http://www.mediafire.com without having to register. You cannot add the Medifire link directly, but you need to go to that link in your browser and then copy the download link. This link can be added to Serviio "Online sources". I did that with one of the videos from the dr.dk XML file that Serviio cannot process and added this link: http://205.196.122.3/tyecxi42kyng/99eac ... b/feed.xml. It works perfectly.

Re: Cannot see online content

Hi Petr,
When is playlist support expected to be published? If it is more than a few weeks ahead I strongly recommend to issue an intermediate version that accepts local XML files as an online source. That is an easy change (I am a retired software engineer), and it would be a great help to the users.

In the meantime I have found a work-around. It is actually more than that, it could become your preferred way of making your own feeds/playlists. It is Yahoo Pipes. Go to http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.edit and you'll find instructions of how you can insert all kinds of resources into a Yahoo Pipe which can become an RSS feed. Here is an example:

http://vpodcast.dr.dk/feeds/kontantrss.xml is one of the feeds from Danish National TV that Serviio will not display the contents of. I figured out what caused it. The titles have a / in the date, such as 20/12 2011. If you change that to 20-12 2011 it works. In Yahoo pipes you can fix this with a loop and string replace (this is all done with graphics). When done you run the pipe and copy the RSS feed link. I did that and got this link: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_ ... render=rss. It now works perfectly in Serviio!

With Yaoo Pipes you immediately have your feed online, but I still think would be a great advantage to be able to keep and edit the XML files locally. So, I hope you can make that change and at the same time, please change your parsing of RSS feeds to accept slashes (/) in item titles and descriptions. Thanks.

Excellent posts. Could you create a Wiki entry in the "How to" section so this is available to everyone? Wiki is here http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php

Re: Cannot see online content

I think some of the articles on the homepage of Serviio and on its Wiki are still too technical, and maybe too common too. I think that Win 7 64bit with dual monitors can cause some extra problems when trying to stream a film from PC to a Samsung.

I was three days trying to get a solution, but something doesn't work. Serviio 0.6.1 runs, when you start it as administrator, Screen Capturer Recorder runs when I found out that it has an installer bat (to which I gave the data of my "main" screen), and VLC runs after the editing of the StreamDesktop.bat-file on the WIKI. However, it was not possible to do anything to audio, because in my Won 7 64bit I don't find out, where to find "Line 1".

Does the streaming to a Samsung need an audio-grabber? I don't need the audio, subtitles are enough?

My Samsung D6300 can find out my PC and Serviio, but nothing about my desktop, only the "videos/music/pictures"

some of them have to be complex and the task itself is complex. End of the day we provide this for FREE so you cant expect everything to be provided, some knowlege and self help is required.

Re: Cannot see online content

Esko: Thanks for the feedback..

I was three days trying to get a solution, but something doesn't work.

My goal is that if people follow the wiki and read the referenced info when they run into problems, and not change things, it would work fine. I've changed some things in the Wiki as follows:

I think that Win 7 64bit with dual monitors can cause some extra problems when trying to stream a film from PC to a Samsung.

Per the WIKI: "see the read me for instructions on how to run the....\configuration_setup_utility"
and Per the SCR read-me:"By default, it captures the "full screen" of the main desktop monitor (all windows, overlapping, there). To configure it differently, run the provided "configuration setup utilities". I've added the suggestion to the Wiki that users should always read the read-me after installing SCR.

Does the streaming to a Samsung need an audio-grabber?

Per the wiki: To get Serviio to play the video stream you also need to include an audio track...To stream your desktop you need to install ...a directshow audio input filter to capture the sound output from the application. I've changed the above in the wiki to "you mustinclude an audio track.

after the editing of the StreamDesktop.bat-file on the WIKI. However, it was not possible to do anything to audio, because in my Won 7 64bit I don't find out, where to find "Line 1".

If you did not install the audio grabber which gives "line 1", and/or took it out of the bat then you won't be able to find it either in VLC or your playback devices. Regardless I have added info to the wiki to verify that the grabbers displayed in VLC match to those used in the .bat file.

My Samsung D6300 can find out my PC and Serviio, but nothing about my desktop, only the "videos/music/pictures"

It looks like you missed the need per the Wiki intro: "The only Serviio change is to add the livestream from your PC to the Serviio console ie: http:192.168.1.10:8081" and "Finally, to setup Serviio to play the stream, add your PC's static address to the Serviio Console/Online Sources/Live Stream in the form http://192.168.1.10:8081" Can you suggest how to change this so others don't miss it?

The improved wiki should help you get this working.
Please post any new feed back to “streaming desk top to tv” thread http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4660&p=32269
as requested in the wiki.

Could be but I'm not going to try and support various options. I've only included the fee VAC option because of free VACGD problems. Once that works I'll only maintain the working free SCR/VACGD process, that I use myself. Others may wish to use mine as a base for Video only and Linux setups. The change log should facilitate that.

I've removed the "must" and added the non-support of the video only option.

Re: Cannot see online content

Apology in advance to resurrect this old thread.

I am trying to organize hulu feeds to get me just the latest episodes of comedy central shows. I can individually add the hulu feeds in serviio console but i rather have them in one feed with new episodes on the top. So i decided to use yahoo pipes. I got the feed the way i wanted. Here is the link http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=793f0305c4dd821379d4fe9ada41e46c&_render=rss. The source for the pipe can be found here [http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=793f0305c4dd821379d4fe9ada41e46c] Now the hard part is making it work with serviio. The serviio complains the feed is not type of video. I added the type=video/mp4 in the link itself but it is still not working.

  Code:
012-03-29 20:45:07,336 DEBUG [OnlineRepositoryDAOImpl] Reading an OnlineRepository (id = 93)
2012-03-29 20:45:07,337 DEBUG [OnlineLibraryManager] Resource http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=793f0305c4dd821379d4fe9ada41e46c&_render=rss not in cache yet, loading it

I know it is not the serviio but the issue is with my feed. Do i need < Enclosure> element in the feed also?
thank you

Re: Cannot see online content

You would have to write a plugin for this feed. The current one is not invoked. Or you'd have to replicate the feed structure the original Hulu feed has and update the plugin to get invoked for the yahoopipes domain.

Re: Cannot see online content

Got it. Now enjoying latest episodes from my fav shows one after another. :D

Just for the readers who might stumble upon this thread in the future - here is what i did per ZIP's  suggestion.

1. Copied hulu.groovy as a new groovy
2. Changed VALID_FEED_URL to match the feed link url from the yahoo pipes.

  Code:
final VALID_FEED_URL = '^(?:https?://)?(pipes\\.|rss\\.)?yahoo\\.com/.*$'

Note: groovy references a hulu player. My yahoo pipe feeds are all from hulu.com.

***Update:***
Use following regular expression if you just want to deal with individual rss feed from yahoo pipes. Above regex matches all yahoo pipes sources and might break other feed, if you are using multiple yahoo pipes .
  Code:
final VALID_FEED_URL = '(http:\\/\\/pipes\\.yahoo\\.com\\/pipes\\/pipe\\.run\\?_id=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx&_render=rss)'
