Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

zip,

I did quite a few tests, mostly with HD stuff from trailershows and showcases and some avc files. My results are a bit lengthy, so I include them a as a file. At least I'd like to, but txt is not allowed as an attachment type. I chose a PM as a quick workaround.

CU back on the forum,

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

Hi all,

as this thread has long ago left the subject of MKV playback and became the official Sony BDP-x70 thread, here's a MPEG2 question:

I just dumped the idea of consolidating my collection of self-made DVDs (mainly DVB recordings) onto BD-R and bought a 2TB HD for my trusted Serviio server. Now is the time to make those DVDs known to the library. The easiest way by far is just whack the DVD into the PC and extract each title as a single VOB. DVDdecrypter does this quite nicely.

Problem is now that there are 4:3 videos among those DVDs, and the aspect ratio seems to get lost in the chain VOB (still 4:3) -> Serviio library -> Serviio server -> Sony BDP -> TV. With real DVDs there is no aspect ratio issue between Player and TV, so I suspect that a/r is either not passed on (or not detected in the first place) by Serviio or not recognized by the Sony.

Anyone found a way around this?

[b]UPDATE: Found that 4:3 aspect ratio is correctly displayed if VOB or MPG is remuxed to TS or M2TS first.[/b]

And the Sony still seems to play any DLNA file in 1080/60p. I think I vaguely remember the Sony switching to 1080/50p for just one file it got through serviio, but I can't think of the format now, maybe it was some kind of divx.

Is there ANY way to trick it into 1080/50p?

Have a nice one,
Low

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

I've tried the last few releases of Serviio, along with many other DLNA servers and I reckon that Serviio is well on the way to supremacy. The source to PS3MS has a lot of hacky workarounds and it seems (at least from what I've read on here) that Serviio is adhering much more rigidly to the actual DLNA spec, which can only be a good thing. However, there are a few things that are not quite right yet. I'll list my feedback below:

The media library is very neat, and I like the movie box art and additional metadata. Shame the Sony BDP devices only seem to be able to show thumbnails for Photo objects for the time being. My 2009 Bravia TV does show them. The generation of thumbnails using FFMPEG seems quite slow though, so I turned that off. I have a suggestion - please could the alphabetical listing of people's names (actors, directors) be sorted by surname, and not by first name? I also noticed that on the Mac the "library status" line in Serviio Console tells you what library activity is happening, but on the Windows version that is not displayed.

I noticed that on Serviio, as well as PS3 Media Server, FFWD/REW does not work for MP4 container files with the Sony BDP. I guess these files ought to be remuxed to M2TS. I'll test this later, but clearly this is a simple profile adjustment.

Playback of HD content (in the chunked mode the Sony BDP requests) works properly thanks presumably to a stateful HTTP handler (something PS3MS lacks). However, there is a problem - files play perfectly smoothly until you FFWD/REW. Once you search in the stream like this the output becomes stuttery and will not recover. This doesn't happen for M2TS files (I discovered from debugging PS3MS that the player does not request M2TS files in chunked mode). There's nothing to compare this post-seek stuttering behaviour to though, since the only two other DLNA servers I've had working with the Sony BDP are PS3MS which cannot FFWD/REW in transcoded/remuxed file - chunked mode HD content stutters during normal playback - and Mezzmo which seems to remux everything to M2TS and won't allow FFWD/REW. EDIT - I see this is a known problem in the issue tracker, along with some general buffer choking issue.

As a feature request - would it be possible to have the Mac version parse the iPhoto Library, showing stuff by events etc.? AFAIK it should be pretty simple - the events are themselves just folders inside the 'Library' which is actually just a folder. I tried adding it manually ('add path' instead of 'add local') but the results were unpredictable (it seemed to really hammer the computer). Those photos that were added seemed to be low res versions for some reason. Photo browsing worked perfectly when running Serviio on the PC however.

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

I have noticed, as discussed here that .MTS files do not seem to be parsed by Serviio. EDIT - I see in the issue tracker this is fixed in the upcoming version 0.5.0.

It seems that VC-1 playback over DLNA on the Sony BDP is as problematic with Serviio as with PS3MS. It seems to play the first couple of seconds of WMV test clips then freeze using either server, so my guess is that it won't ever work satisfactorily, and that looks to be the player's fault. The same clips play fine off USB.

That said, I noticed that I could put to use the tricks I had discovered using PS3MS, namely that it's not only the mime-type that's significant to the player: I can get the player to list the appropriate files and use the M2TS and MPEG icons by forcing the DLNA media type name field instead. I had wanted to do this before version 0.4.2 but I assumed Zip would have to extensively modify the code, so when I saw the 2010 Bravia TV profile in 0.4.2 I realised it was possible.Those same substitutions for the Bravia TVs don't work with the Sony BDP incidentally (the _HD_50 ones). I also added a few DLNA media types that were missing, fixed detection of M2TS files, and fixed up the media type for remuxed M2TS H.264 files - something that would not have worked at all until now. Here are my MediaFormatProfiles values for European models:

Substitute MPEG_TS_SD_EU for MPEG_TS_SD_NA or MPEG_TS_SD_JP depending on your region, and replace MPEG_PS_PAL with MPEG_PS_NTSC of course. I have no idea about the Japanese players, but I remember from the PS3MS forum that North American BDP owners cannot use the DivX mime-type hack to play MKV and AVI content, but must instead use MPEG. So the following ought to work for North America - though they lose some of the cooler features of the player's native MKV support (subtitles, multiple selectable audio streams):

  Code:
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="audio/mpeg" name="MP3">WMA_BASE</MediaFormatProfile>
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="audio/mpeg" name="MP3">WMA_FULL</MediaFormatProfile>

I have found a problem with .m2ts files taken directly off an unencrypted Bluray disc (well AVCHD really - I used the free x264 encoder showcase disc). The footage of the tall ship on that disc is probably the most detailed bit of H.264 I have seen. These files will play fine with PS3MS, and off USB too.

I get this in the log:

Here's the FFMPEG info using the version included with Serviio:

Any idea why this might be a problem file?
EDIT - hang on, I see it's the DTS audio which I see is also a known issue in the tracker.

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

I should say - I have edited the last two posts quite a lot so Zip, if you read them earlier you may need to take another look.

Transcoding MP4 container H.264 files seems by and large to work very well - the resulting MPEG2 Transport Streams allow seeking. The added bonus is that .MOV container H.264 files play back smoothly (they stutter when the player tackles them natively). However I'm getting "unsupported audio codec" for some files. This is with the transcode options set to preserve original number of channels. If I set the transcode preferences to downmix to 2 channels then I get a file corrupt error at the player.

Here are my transcode settings:
  Code:
<Transcoding>
   <!-- remux MP4 container files to allow seeking (AVC_TS_MP_HD_AC3_ISO or AVC_TS_MP_SD_AC3_ISO) -->
   <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetACodec="ac3">
      <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264"
   </Video>
   <!-- unsupported codecs will be transcoded into mpeg2ts, mpeg2video and ac3 audio (MPEG_TS_SD_EU). -->
   <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3">
      <Matches container="asf" />
      <Matches container="avi" vCodec="mjpeg" />
   </Video>
</Transcoding>

I notice that I can't specify to leave the audio completely untouched like say just: <Video targetContainer="mpegts">
Is there a way?

Here's the output from FFMPEG for the problem file:

Good job Patters!
I also use a Sony BDP-S373 Bluray-Player with my Sony Bravia EX501 TV.
For the moment, I only use my Bravia TV with DLNA Serviio, but I could check your profile with the BDP...

For testing, I suggest to use the same Samples files, for example: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=608#p3046

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

You only need the _ISO types for AVC in MPEGTS container which we're forcing modifications on - the others which are MPEGPS (like DVD VOBs etc.) will be inherited from the default profile and work unmodified, which is why I left them out.

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

I have removed the VC-1 media types since the player chokes on them natively (ASF containers are set to transcode to MPEG2). Although the player will play non-VC-1 WMV files we cannot filter them in the transcode settings - all ASF container files are caught by that - so no point in declaring WMV at all in the device profile. I also think we need the AutoImageRotation setting. I don't have a camera to hand, but I remember it certainly autorotates images from USB so I guess it would for DLNA too. I guess we need to investigate the audio side of things now. Judging from my testing with PS3MS the BDP doesn't play much - MP3, WMA & WAV (and all of those needed forcing to mime type audio/mpeg) - everything else needed transcoding including M4A and AAC (non-DRM) which it's advertised as being able to play.

I have found another DLNA media type Serviio can't identify:

File is available here. It's the full resolution MP4 with surround sound - from the torrent link.

Here's the info from FFMPEG:

For me, Sintel-2048.mp4 works fine:

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

That's strange. I got mine from the torrent (totally legit obv.) - was yours from the direct download links?

I have been testing audio - MP3 works fine for European players (how about US?).
I can get WMA audio playing (Microsoft test clip here) by forcing mime and DLNA media type to MP3:
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="audio/mpeg" name="MP3">WMA_BASE</MediaFormatProfile>
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="audio/mpeg" name="MP3">WMA_FULL</MediaFormatProfile>

WAV files won't detect, even by forcing the LPCM types to MP3 in the same way (is WAV even supported by Serviio?)
FLAC files won't detect (not supported by Serviio AFAIK), though FFMPEG can ID it fine, so presumably could be made to transcode to LPCM.

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

Does anyone know how to play FLAC files on the 370?

I assume adding some kind of transcoding header to convert the said FLAC files into LPCM?
Ive no idea how to start ( ive read the brief How to guide but im none the wiser).

Thx in advance

With 0.4.2 Serviio version, for the moment FLAC is not supported.
Serviio can only detect aac, ac3, mp3, mp2, pcm_s16le, wmav2, dca (DTS)... Zip, do you plan this?

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

Hey patters,

Thanks for the tweaked profile, seems to work pretty well. A few days ago I filed a bitbucket ticket named "Triggering transcoding on wma_pro and wmv3", which is basically to allow filtering and transcoding of non(-Sony)-compliant codecs in asf containers and leaving all basic asf stuff untouched.

Speaking of the player's abilites: I'm still looking for a suitable container format for DVD-compliant MPEG2/MP2 files with subtitles. Has anyone achieved subs on the Sony BDP with anything other than MKV (and I'm not too sure about MKV working anymore either)? VOB seems to be no option, because an occasional 4:3 aspect ratio is not detected correctly from VOBs.

Have a nice one,
Low

Re: Problems with MKV / H.264 on Sony BDP-S370 Bluray-Player

Ive another question regarding MKV's ( 264 + dts audio).
This seems to be the offical thread for the Sony 370 so ill continue posting here.

Everything ive thrown at it so far is working like a charm - ive transcoding turned off so i get the raw data streamed and everything is perfect - almost - sometimes i do get glitches - as though the data isnt being sent quick enough.

Is this a bandwidth problem? Its usually during heavy action /sound parts ( but not always ).

I am not using wlan - only using cable so i would have thought this would be ok.

Is there something i can do or maybe something ive not done that i should have.

Super programm BTW

Just for information, could you press the I+ button on remote control to look the realtime bitrate during glitch?
Also, could you have a look to the Windows Task Manager, Networking Tab?
