Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

Hi guys.
First of all, I'm a newbie :D
I'm having a problem with my Samsung C550. I can't play some of my .mkv files. Some of them play right, some others give me on the TV an error message "Unsupported Video Codec" (actually it's in spanish so the translation could be different, the original message is "Codec de Video no admitido").

I've checked a file that works and another that doesn't with ffmpeg -i. Both files throw similar information:
This one works fine:
  Code:
 matroska,webm @ 013cbc10  Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccur
ate

Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 47.95 (48000/
1001) -> 23.98 (48000/2002)
Input #0, matroska,webm, from

  Duration: 00:42:52.02, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 384 kb/s
    Stream #0.0(eng): Video: h264, yuv420p, 1280x720, PAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 23.98 fp
s, 23.98 tbr, 1k tbn, 47.95 tbc
    Stream #0.1: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16, 384 kb/s
At least one output file must be specified

This one doesn't:
  Code:
matroska,webm @ 0037bb50 Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccur
ate

Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 47.95 (48000/
1001) -> 23.98 (48000/2002)
Input #0, matroska,webm, from

  Duration: 00:43:10.14, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 448 kb/s
    Stream #0.0(eng): Video: h264, yuv420p, 1280x720, PAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 23.98 fp
s, 23.98 tbr, 1k tbn, 47.95 tbc
    Stream #0.1: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16, 448 kb/s
At least one output file must be specified

The only difference is the bitrate, 448 kb/s seems to be unsupported. I really don't know what's the meaning of that, but I've read the forum and I think I need transcoding. The profile is Samsung C-Series, the default installation values. How do I enable transcoding? or do I need to convert the files?

Yes, some files fail to play, because of the way they are encoded. Can you post MediaInfo of the file?

Two solutions:

1/ remux your file with TsMuxer tools by changing h264 profile level to 4.1.

2/ Try new 0.5.1 serviio feature : H264 profile/level is now extracted from H264 videos and transcoding matcher has been updated to support transcoding of files with certain profile/level;

Could you add these lines on the first video section on your samsung profile:
  Code:
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384">
   <Matches container="matroska" vCodec="h264" profile="high" levelGreaterThan="4.1" />
</Video>

When remuxing mkvs, pay extra attention to disable Matroska feature "Header Removal Compression".
AFAIK. none of Samsung's DLNA devices implement this feature.

FYI , you could just use H264LevelEditor to change your h264 profile level .
it is free and takes a few seconds to change h264 profile level .
Fast and easy.

Illico, I've added the new transcoding but it didn't work.

But, using the gonjeng's solution it's working as a charm.
Thank's guys!

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

Hi,

I have a very similar problem like described in this topic. MKV file did not play with Samsung C/D series profile included as is in Serviio 0.5.2 version. I added this simple line as suggested somewhere, and it worked.

  Code:
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video">
<Matches container="matroska"/>
</Video>

This line will transcode every MKV file that it has been found, and I think it is better to narrow a bit with the new parameters 'vCodec', profile' and 'levelGreaterThan' included in 0.5.2. Unfortunately it did not work (or I was unable find a solution):

  Code:
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video">
<Matches container="matroska" profile="high" levelGreaterThan="4.1"/>
</Video>

The logs follows:

  Code:

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

This particular file won't play because the profile is too high (16 ref frames). Your level-based transcode config should work, could you provide detailed log of when you try to play the file?

Well, here is the debug-level log file. It seems the file is always played in native format, but could not find why.
Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

H264 profile and level was probably not stored into the serviio library properly.

Could you
- Delete or rename the logging file.
- Rename the mkv file
- Restart the serviio service
- Force library update
- Check the detailed logging when file is added to the library.

EDIT : in 0.6 serviio will detect profile differently.

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

Ok, I did step-by-step your suggested list and here is the attached results. However, refreshing the library was more clear and I have found this sentence that it says all:

  Code:
2011-05-24 18:21:16,709 WARN  [VideoExtractionStrategy] Couldn't resolve H264 profile/level for file 'rebel_track.mkv' because Sequence parameter set header was not recognized

So, the problem is the way that file was encoded. Too bad, :(

I read the topic about how will be detected h264 files in the next release. I really hope that will solve those damn h264 files, :)

Many thanks for your work.

Edited: Found this sentence that clarify better:

2011-05-24 18:22:08,646 DEBUG [LibraryManager] Metadata found via extractor EMBEDDED: VideoMetadata [title=rebel_track, filePath=C:\Users\Rafael\Videos\rebel_track.mkv, fileSize=827886936, audioBitrate=null, audioCodec=AAC, audioStreamIndex=1, bitrate=null, channels=2, container=MATROSKA, contentType=UNKNOWN, coverImage=org.serviio.library.metadata.ImageDescriptor@2598a35d, duration=2059, episodeNumber=null, fps=23.976, frequency=48000, h264Level=null, h264Profile=null, height=1080, seasonNumber=null, seriesName=null, timestampType=null, videoBitrate=null, videoCodec=H264, videoStreamIndex=0, width=1920]

That values seem not retrieved and not stored. So the parser don't know about h264 profile/level, right?

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

rafaelg wrote:That values seem not retrieved and not stored. So the parser don't know about h264 profile/level, right?

Right!
Thanks for your analyze.
Don't know if the h264 parameters could be fixed. Look at this tool.

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

Well, nothing to do then.
I knew those tools before posting in this thread (in fact, I was reading a lot here and there about this problem). Tried H264Level unsuccesfully (yes, i could lower the level but it doesn't work).
I will avoid to reencode every file for now.

Thanks again!

Re: Samsung C-Series vs MKV files. Transcoding?

I have a similar problem, I downloaded Band of Brothers in 1080p mkv files and 4 of 11 episodes are playable, when I try to play the other ones I get the "codec not supported message". I have a Samsung LE46C635 (LCD 6 Series) TV.

This is mediainfo from one of the files which aren't playable:

The only difference I can see is High@L4.1 on the playable file and High@L5.1 on the file that's not playable.

I've tested a couple of solutions in this thread, H264LevelEditor, tsMuxer and adding following lines into the profiles-file in windows:

  Code:
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video">
<Matches container="matroska" profile="high" levelGreaterThan="4.1"/>
</Video>

But none of the solutions have worked. I still don't really know how to use tsMuxer so maybe someone could help me out with that? Or are there any other solutions?

Thanks ;)
