jhb50 wrote:OK. Look in the Transcoded Files location (see console/Transcoding) and copy and rename the .stf to .mpg Then try and play it on your PC and then thru Serviio. Then run ffmpeg -i and mediainfo against it and post the results. You did all this before but never posted the transcoded file info. Be nice to see the serviio log too.

Actually, I just noticed this, but using your C/D profile it doesn't seem to transcode the file at all. I don't see anything in the transcoded files folder now. The only way I was able to get it to transcode was to add a catch-all rule for all MKV's.

EDIT: By adding the catch-all rule, it transcodes properly and plays the problematic MKV's perfectly now with the C/D profile your posted. But this means it will transcode all MKV's, which is kind of a waste. Also, is there any way for it to allow embedded subtitles when it transcodes?

Re: Problems with some MKV's on Samsung Series 5 LCD TV

Unless you can pinpoint why some of your .mkv's will not play, you really have no choice but to transcode them all.

Everything I have read on the forum indicates that embedded subtitles cannot be played. Transcoding has nothing to do with it. You must have an external .srt file for both native and transcoded playback.

I'd be interested to know if your catch-all rule included the maxVBitrate option and if the transcoded files will play without including that option. ie: does your TV have the 435 bug?

Ifthe player supports playback of embedded subtitles then they can be viewed when watching native content. If you transcode the embedded subtitles are lost.

Re: Problems with some MKV's on Samsung Series 5 LCD TV

OK for the Samsung here are the supported subtitle formats for the C/D TV's.

Supported Video Subitle Formats (for language subtiles, etc.)
Name / File extension / Format
MPEG-4 time-based text / .ttxt / XML
SAMI / .smi / HTML
SubRip / .srt / string-based
SubViewer / .sub / string-based
Micro DVD / .sub or .txt / string-based

I think that means there is no embedded Subtitle support.

The Blu-Ray players have no documentation, but they do play .srt files which Serviio will pass to them, so I assume their support is the same as the TV'.

Yes, I'm seeing the same. The OP might want to report this to the FFmpeg team (via their mail list or raise a ticket with the link/upload to this mpg file)

My catch-all rule does included maxVBitrate="8192" in order to play. Otherwise it just won't. Also, ffmpeg doesn't seem to be transcoding fast enough for me to get stutter-free playback on some 1080p files. I tried increasing the socket buffer but that didn't seem to work. If I stop/pause playback and replay it after a while, it streams just fine until it "catches up" with the end of the transcoded video.

720p seems to do fine though. I'm on a wired network, D-Link DIR-600 router running DD-WRT. My system includes an i7 930 @ 4ghz and 6GB of RAM and I have it set to transcode on all 4 cores (HT off), so CPU power isn't the issue.

And regarding embedded subtitles, if that is true, then why does PS3 Media Server allow me to view embedded subs after transcoding on my TV, unlike Serviio? Is it a MEncoder VS FFmpeg thing?

With everything else however, I do prefer Serviio's interface and everything else since it looks more professionally done. :)

Re: Problems with some MKV's on Samsung Series 5 LCD TV

I can't address your stuttering problem, but if the transcoded file plays when maxVBitrate is used, but won't play without it, then that confirms the #435 bug. I've posted additional info regarding that bug so hopefully zip will be able to fix it in 6.1 .. until then keep adding that parameter to mpeg2video transcodes. I now use maxVBitrate="20000" which preserves the quality of the transcode.

Regarding embedded subtitles, PMS will transcode video picture and burn subtitles to it before sending to the TV.

So no idea why it doesn't seem to be transcoding fast enough despite having a decent computer and having it use all 4 cores?

I use all 8 cores on my i7. No problem here. Make sure you have any P2P downloading/uploading paused.

Hmm, well it's quite strange for it to not be transcoding some videos quick enough to be real time. Something to do with the format, perhaps? And yes, I've tried turning off all P2P during transcoding.

Also, I can confirm the #435 bug is probably Samsung FW related, since the behavior is exactly the same on PS3MS.

Try watching the stf file grow while u are watching the video to see if you can relate it to the loading delays. Also pause your video for a minute and then lay to see if the delays go away..ie: the transcoding has a bit of time to get a head start. You also have not said you increased your cores to 8 from 4. Also watch the network bytes/sec in the task manager to see if it is related to the slowdown.

I've actually tried that. And yes, pausing it for a while then resuming playback does remove the stuttering similar to how one buffers a video online. Also as for the 4 VS 8 cores thing, it didn't seem to make any difference with HT on or off, so I just kept it off for better temps.

Network transfer seems to fluctuate depending on whether it actually has something to send (like the next frame is already transcoded) or not. I'm quite confused myself as to why it isn't transcoding certain videos fast enough, actually. I don't recall running into this sort of problem back when my PS3 was still working and I was using it with PS3MS. However using PS3MS directly with the TV also exhibits the same stuttering problem, which leads me to believe it may have something to do with the TV itself.
