Problems with some MKV's on Samsung Series 5 LCD TV

Hi all. I'm not sure about the model code of my TV, however it's a Samsung Series 5 40" LCDTV. Serviio detected it but only assigned it to "Generic DLNA Profile". I can't play certain MKV's of some anime episodes I watch. Transcoding is on, and I've tried all of the Samsung profiles including the profiles.xml fix to no avail. The error message is "Unsupported video format".

Also, another question. Does Serviio support embedded ASS subtitles? Because I don't see subs on some MKV's unless I manually extract the subs and convert them to SRT's. Otherwise, I'm loving how much more professional Servio works and appears, having come from PS3 Media Server. I just wish it would play all of my files. :)

Not enough info on the file. Post Mediainfo (text) output.

Subtitles are added to a video ie: placed on top of the image, by the renderer. Serviio does not render. It only sends the video stream to the DLNA device for rendering. You will have to look at your device manual to see what subtitles it is capable of overlaying on the video when it is rendered. Probably just .srt on Samsung.

My TV won't even play this one via USB, meaning it's not supported. I was somewhat hoping Serviio would transcode it on the fly for me though, but it doesn't.

Also yes, external SRT's are the only way subs are displayed without transcoding. So am I right in assuming in general, Samsung TV's don't support embedded subtitles of any sort?

I'd appreciate any form of help on this. The TV doesn't seem to support this even via USB, so I assume I need to tell Serviio to transcode it..

Model number is LA40D550. Serviio didn't recognize it and assigned it a Generic DLNA Profile. I tried manually using the A/B/C-D profiles, but none would allow me to play a lot of my MKV's.

Also, I don't believe the TV works with any of the transcoded content. I suppose the target transcoded format itself on the profile isn't supported by the TV.

there should be a file (.srt) in the transcoding folder. try to rename it to .mpg and add it to the library and see if you can play it natively.

With the stock profiles.xml file, there is nothing in the transcoding folder. However if I add a catch-all for all MKV's it does trasncode it:

Thing is, all I see in the transcoding folder is a 195KB .STF file. And the TV gives me a "Video Codec not Supported" error. This is using the Samsung B-series profile.

EDIT: Okay, I waited a while, and the Serviio kept transcoding even when I had stopped playing the file. Copied the resulting STF file to my library (not complete, it was still transcoding), renamed to MPG, and it played fine (albeit without subs, and it stuttered a bit because it wasn't complete).

It doesn't play even if I put it on a USB stick and connect it to the TV. I haven't tried Samsung's software yet, but I'll give it a shot.

His output is the same as my D series Samsung so he should use the c/d profile, but think he has hit the #435 bug https://bitbucket.org/xnejp03/serviio/issue/435/samsung-d-series-tv-transcoding-to and will need to add maxVBitrate.

Just out of curiosity, I tried your attached C/D profile. TV gives me "Unsupported Video Data" error when I play the problematic MKV's.

I'm sorry if I'm misunderstanding something, but I've applied the maxVBitrate="8192" parameter to the transcoding rule. Is that the workaround you mean?

OK. Look in the Transcoded Files location (see console/Transcoding) and copy and rename the .stf to .mpg Then try and play it on your PC and then thru Serviio. Then run ffmpeg -i and mediainfo against it and post the results. You did all this before but never posted the transcoded file info. Be nice to see the serviio log too.
