.5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

I've been using Serviio for about 2 months now and have really been enjoying it. Great product and Great Job Zip.

I just upgraded to .5 of Serviio and for some reason, the audio for the video files (mp4) I used to listen to before sounded (they are music videos) really good. However after the upgrade to .5 the sound quality has really gone down and seems to fluctuate for some reason.

For some reason I also can't see MP3 files or Pictures (this didn't work with .4.2 either).

I am also noticing that my US version BD Player is being recognized as an EU version. I have selected the US version profile (Sony BD Player (US)) and it seems to work ok besides what I mentioned.

I'm running this on Windows 7, 64bit.

I would like to fix the audio and at least get MP3's to play. Pictures are optional.

Thanks for the help.

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

The EU is detected, the US not - that's the deal. I'm not sure if there is a HTTP header separating those two. So use the US version.

Regarding worse audio quality, the beta testers changed the profile to do a lot mote transcoding so maybe there is some quality loss there.

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

Using the EU version didn't make a difference for me.

Thanks Zip, I'll compare the old profile (the one posted for .4.2 posted by patters) and see if I can figure out the differences as it relates to mp4's.

Any reason you know as to why MP3's wouldn't work? These are just normal MP3's nothing special.

Someone else mentioned non-working MP3s:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1492

They thought it was only 48KHz ones that would play but I tested with this file and it plays ok:

As for your mp4 sound issue - not sure. The only way it would be transcoded would be if it was MJPEG video in MP4 (I added that for some stills camera video files). If it's H.264 in mp4 then it is remuxed but the audio is copied intact. So, try enabling detailed logging and looking to see what Serviio is doing.

I found the problem with the mp4's and it was my DB player. It was trying to change the 2 channel AC3 to surround (DTS Neo:6)(admittedly, I do not know much about what DTS NEO:6 is or what it does) and not doing a good job of it either. I turned it off and they are sounding awesome now. I am guessing that previously it didn't detect it as DTS or something? I'm not sure to be honest, I just know with it off, it's not a problem now.

I used both the .4.2 profile and the .5 profile and it worked awesome with both. The .5 profile is just more granular, so if something's not quite right with your BD setup, it will show up now (good I think).

As far as the MP3's, was there something you wanted me to try? The one file I am trying to play is Bit Rate: 320 kbps & Sample Rate: 48.000 kHz. The exact error I get is: "There are no playable files"

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

Ok, so perhaps the Sony won't play 48KHz mp3 files then. I don't have any but I'll investigate. If it's the player that doesn't like them then you'll have to wait until Serviio can do audio transcoding.

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

I have some 44.100 kHz files as well and they don't seem to work either.

As a secondary test, I took the 48.000 and 44.100 hHz files and put them on a flash drive and tried it that way and it didn't work either :( I suppose that points to the BD player for sure.

Can you post one of the non-working ones on here (via Dropbox or something?). Is yours a US or EU model?

Mine is the US model.

I uploaded both to my web server. You can get them at these links:

44.100 kHz: www.mxguy.com/3pm/02_Bruno-Mars-Just-Th ... ou-Are.mp3
48.000 kHz: www.mxguy.com/3pm/08_Linkin-Park_Waitin ... he-End.mp3

Let me know when you have them so I can delete them. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

Ok, both of those play fine on the European firmware, from the front USB port and from Serviio. So I did some testing and I see that Mezzmo declares the MP3 mime type as audio/mp3 rather than audio/mpeg. I also see that all of Mezzmo's transcoded LPCM fails to play (which we'll need once Serviio does audio transcoding).

Does adding this to the Sony BD Player (US) profile help?
  Code:
         <MediaFormatProfile mime-type="audio/mp3">MP3</MediaFormatProfile>

I guess that wouldn't explain why you can't play them from USB. Are you sure you browsed the audio section of the XMB and not the video?

Oh my gosh! First off I am really sorry for wasting your time. :(

I did not realize that I couldn't view a anything except video's under the video's section, Audio under audio, and pictures under pictures.

it works just fine now that I know what I'm doing. Classic 1D10T error on my part.

Everything works perfectly now from Serviio and USB!

Zip, is there something to do to directly browse the proper section folder (Audio/Vidéo/Photo) according to the renderer menu selection? on the first renderer browse upnp get message?

there is a topic here somewhere, apparently WMS can do it, but I'm not sure how (maybe port numbers)

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

I remember someone said that but I found that not to be the case for me - I have whatever WMP/WMC that comes with Windows 7 Ultimate.
EDIT - do you mean Wild Media Server? I'll check it out...

The Sony Bravia 2009 DLNA client is sensitive to an additional Sony custom DLNA folder attribute indicating the media type of a folder and will only show a video folder from the video menu on the XMB, audio from audio menu etc. However I found during experiments I made with the PS3 Media Server source code and testing with uPnP Tool that it has no effect on the BD Players. Mezzmo uses these custom attributes too regardless of renderer but again no effect on BDP.

It's helpful to consider how DLNA works at a basic level - the server just lists folder contents and the client decides what media types to show you. If your client only shows you audio in the audio menu hierarchy that's not something Serviio can change. Nor can Serviio tell which parent menu on the device you're browsing from - hence the need to show all the media folders all of the time, which adds to the confusion. Clearly DLNA is not well thought out as a standard from a usability point of view but then I think that much is obvious :)

It's a shame really. TiVo managed to make a technophobe-friendly UI pretty much a decade ago but Sony and the rest of the DLNA consortium can't manage in 2011!

Re: .5 Sounds Quality BDP-S570

For me it's fine the way it is as I recognize it's a limitation of the BD player. Again thanks for all the help.
