Serviio to PS3 performance issues

G'day All,

I'm having significant performance issues serving all video (hi-def and otherwise) from my media centre to my ps3 and Bravia. Playback randomly stutters, with long (5-10s) gaps between short periods of play (>5s). However, sometimes playback is perfect. Both perfect playback and choppy playback happen on the same video file. My setup:

Serviio 0.5 serving 100mbps -> wireless-g -> Sony PS3 (3.56)/Bravia HX800.

Transcoding is turned off, network usage remains stable (oftentimes with the PS3/Bravia the only device using the network), there are no draining processes running on the server and server performance is fine. It could be disk performance, considering it's pulling the data from an external (USB) HDD, but I don't understand why the choppy performance is intermittent if this is the case.
UPnP is turned on on the PS3.

Load times are also slow.

Additionally, after upgrading Serviio to 0.5 I have noticed that next to the PS3 profile there is an orange dot (whereas next to the Bravia one there is a green one). I've had a cursory glance through the documentation and I didn't see anything as to what these signify, but I probably missed it. Anyone who can shed some light earns a number of delicious cookies.

I'm a mite frustrated - been playing with it for a while and I love Serviio when performance is good - and would be incredibly grateful if anyone could lend a hand.

Cheers,
Simon

Wireless. But issue occurs (or did, under Serviio 0.42) wired as well.

Additional information: Have just tested it wired under 0.5 and the issue still occurs. Streaming hidef content from the internet wired and wireless works flawlessly, however.

Re: Serviio to PS3 performance issues

Hi,

I use Serviio 0.5 and a PS3 and seldom experience any performance issues, sometimes reaching 40mpbs (as reported by the PS3) for sustained periods of time.

As you have eliminated transcoding as an issue, would it be possible to access the video file over a network file share? If that plays well, it could eliminate hard disk performance and network bandwidth as the cause, albeit over a different protocol.

I sure wish I could just figure out why transcoding doesn't work on anything. Or is there any way some one can explain how to get it to work in simple English?

Re: Serviio to PS3 performance issues

G'day Zip,

Upped the buffer to 128k, 1mb, and took it down to 32kb. Nothing much seems to have changed, except longer load times at 1mb.

While playing from the network share (100mbps -> wireless-n) isn't perfect, the performance is superior to serviio streaming.

Thanks for the info. My Sony bdp-bx57 gives me an orange light, but it still works ok.
