NOTE: I've searched the forum and found several similar posts, but most don't have a clear (to me, at least) resolution and end up with the Mod asking for detailed file/log info particular to the case. So I'm just going to go ahead and describe my problem and give all the relevant data I can.

It seems that it is a common enough problem. I'm using a PS3 as a rendering device and it is "stuttering" on many videos. The problem isn't limited to only MKV files and it seems that sometimes the video is issue and sometimes the audio.

First I am running the Serviio (1.4.1.2) server on my MacBook Pro:


It is a wired network.

I can't list info for every file I have an issue with so I guess I'll choose the most recent I've had problems with (let me know if it a bad example for some reason).
In this case the audio plays flawlessly while the video just speed skips between stills:

Is it a hardware issue? can my MBP just not handle transcoding on the fly? It says the transcoding is finished, but I'm not clear on all the details of the process.
FYI, I tried deleting the STF file before selecting the file for the purposes of detail logging, but it still says "A suitable transcoding job already exists".

Sometime with my old Sony Bravia 2010, some h264 remux have stuttering, but I don't know why..h264 encoding settings that sony does not support?!

So I create a custom profile that transcode h264 to mpeg2video that I selected for this particular file.

For your PS3, you can try this one:

Copy/Paste in profiles.xml file just before the last </Profiles> element. Restart serviio services or reboot PC, then manually select the custom profile on serviio console.
You can change profile before viewing other files.

It would be better if we could see the detailed log showing the ffmpeg command being invoked - you need to clear the transcode cache so that we can capture this. Rather than simply deleting the transcoded stf file (which is not normally a good idea), restart your Serviio service (or better, restart the Mac).

Also if you remux the file to MP4 does it continue to stutter? To remux use the command: ffmpeg - i filename.mkv -c copy -map 0 filename.mp4 and try the resultant mp4 file.

Also remuxing the file manually to MP4 solves the stuttering problem.

What is the best long term solution for this? Should I alter the PS3 profile in someway? Can that remuxing be done "on the fly" or at least right before the video plays? It didn't take very long.

Transcoding on the fly to mp4 container is not supported by serviio.
But you can do it manually with ffmpeg.

Then my custom profile should also do the job.If you have problem with one file, open serviio console, manually select the custom profile.
Then on next time or at the end oh the file, come back to the official profile.

I tried out your strategy and after I attempt to open the file I get an unsupported data type error.

so it is a different ffmpeg call using the new profile, but I guess it creates something that my PS3 can't read as a result?

EDIT : I suppose I could find some utility that will batch process ffmpeg commands and I can just use DenyAll's strategy on all the files that are troublesome... or just get more fluent at using the command line. So there is no way to set up a profile that will call the ffmpeg - i filename.mkv -c copy -map 0 filename.mp4 command? Maybe a plugin for Serviio? It really only took my computer seconds to run that command, I'd be willing to wait that long before a video plays...

Batch process the ffmpeg command - if you were a Windows user my tool here will do it (use the Remux tab, set to remux from MKV to MP4): viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12136. As a MAC user you may have to write something yourself.

No, Serviio cannot transcode on the fly to an MP4 container.
