[SOLVED] Sony KDL-55W805B won't load SRT subtitles

Hi guys, I am new to Serviio and have tried to find a solution to this issue here at the forum, so far unsuccessfully. I have Serviio running in my MBP as the media server for the KDL-55W805B. The TV is able to find the media server and load the whole movie folder without issue.

The problem I have is that no movie will load the separate <movie_name>.srt file inside each movie folder. The only way it works is with embedded subtitle within the movie file. I am using profile Sony Bravia TV (2013/2014) and Serviio Console 1.5 (latest version). I have tried to load some custom profiles as well, but I had no luck with the srt.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Sony Bravia does not support external srt files over DLNA (only over USB).

Subtitles should be either embedded in mkv file or "burned" in video stream.

To do the second, you have to enable subtitle burning on serviio console setting (with remote drive, ffmpeg burning process could be very slow).

Thank you very much Illico, this solved the problem. I have enabled the Delivery -> Subtitles -> "Enable subtitles" and "Enable burned-in subtitles" set to Always using Serviio-Console 1.5. In order to make it work with brazilian-portuguese subtitles, I had to set the Delivery -> Subtitles -> "Subtitle character encoding" to UTF-8, then, make sure the .srt file has a compatible encoding format. Example:

RICARSAN-M-FABG:Fury (2014) [1080p] ricarsan$ file *.srt
Fury.2014.1080p.BluRay.x264.YIFY.srt: UTF-8 Unicode text, with CRLF line terminators

I suggest using MKV merge tool, it takes almost none of your time, but than TV does decoding insted of CPU in computer, so you can use your PC with no slowdowns while watching movies on TV.

Not to mention that with MKV embedded subs, the subs can be switched on and off on the Bravia during playback AND the picture quality is not affected by burning the subs into videos that wouldn't be transcoded otherwise.
