sony bdp s-570 and subtitles

I cannot get the subtitles to play. I've tried renaming the .srt files to coincide with the name on the .avi file.
The player does not recognize it. Nothing on the remote to activate them either.
Is there a step by step procedure ?

did you even attempt to search the forum? or read the READ ME FIRST post? Or looked at the sticky related to Sony players in this forum?

Actually I did. I tried changing the name of the file, moving them in to a directory, etc.
I could not find any "tools", menu to change and have no idea of some of the vocabulary that is mentioned.
I could use a little direction, as I'm maybe not as adept at this, however am trying.
