No subtitles on SMP-N100 since 0.6.1

0.6.0.1 allowed a specific SMP-N100 profile to be selected, since 0.6.1 it has been merged with the Sony Bluray player profile.

The problem is that since then the subtitles refuse to show up on the SMP-N100, this inspite of the fact that the unit indicates the presence of the subtitle.

The work around for now is to choose the Sony Bravia 2011 profile, problem & solution is consistent across both Windows & the Synology version.

Please consider de-merging & retaining a separate profile for the SMP-N100 ... thanks in advance !!

are these subtitles external or inside the file container?

Subtitles in which types of media? I assume you mean mkv? If so, you can edit profiles.xml to enable this (read the sticky about the Sony BDP in the forum, and read the comments in the XML). However, it messes up other things so it's disabled by default.

The SMP-N100 profile in 0.6.0.1 wasn't materially different from the BDP one (the only difference was the AVI line in fact, and it may have broken it for US players). Is it AVI-integrated subs you're referring to? None of the Sony devices support external srt subs.

If it's AVI xsub support you're talking about then I think I have found the solution (and it would fit with the only difference between the BDP and SMP profiles in 0.6.0.1 as I described above):

I'll update the Sony BDP sticky tomorrow. I think I was too busy with Synology NAS stuff when this was first noticed.

Finally got a moment to test, and my suspicions are correct. I never realised that .divx files could even contain subs. I used AVIAddXsubs to inject some srt subs into an avi and with the stock profile the Sony BDP/SMP won't display them. However, the current stock profile settings are required to allow avi playback at all on US region players, so this profile will need remain as it is.

To get divx xsub support, you need to stop Serviio completely. Then edit config/profiles.xml. In the Sony BDP/SMP profile (currently number 10) comment out the AVI line, by changing this:
  Code:
<MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mpeg" name="MPEG_PS_PAL,MPEG_PS_NTSC">AVI</MediaFormatProfile>

to this:
  Code:
<!-- MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mpeg" name="MPEG_PS_PAL,MPEG_PS_NTSC">AVI</MediaFormatProfile> -->

Restart Serviio and xsub support is back. I'll update the Sony BDP sticky post tomorrow, and I'll ask Zip to update the comment inside profiles.xml in future releases to make this clear.

Thanks for your response & regret the delay at my end. Confirm that your solution works both on Windows & Synology. I have couple of Inputs on the Synology Version, will start a separate thread for it. Kudos for the Synology port !!

xsubs within an avi container ... patters solution works, guess the SMP-N100 exclusive profile is destined to the graveyard. Serviio is nothing short of spectacular in terms of functionality but the Synology version could do with some tweaking. Cheers !!

Hello, I am glad I stumbled on to this thread, I've been trying for a month to play subs with no success, even tried to stream my desktop but that did n't work either, in an attempt to circumvent SONY's alleged non-support of external subtitle files, Will that work with .srt or .sub files?

So IF I understand correctly the SONY SMP-N100 is -indeed- capable of playing external subtitles on top of a video file when both are "served" by Serviio from a NAS box on my home network but ONLY when using a different than the default profile for the SONY?

If yes, this is something I would like to test. I am using the latest Serviio with Windows 7 (32 bit). Is it possible by anyone to provide a basic step-by-step tutorial?

Will be much appreciated - Thank you!

Morten, hi!

Nothing to be sorry about, I am glad you "jumped" in!

Can you please tell how you were able to see "some" subtitles using Serviio and the SONY-N100 ?

I believe I landed in the correct thread but I can't seem to know where to get started. I followed the link above but it comes back to the same exact page.

So if I want to enable subtitles, specifically .srt files to display "over" my videos what do I have to do with Serviio and what with the SONY.

Thank you very much!

Hi DimPan

Sorry for the late answer, but i have been working on nightshift for some days (nights)

I run the ISO through Handbrake, and markt the subtitles as burned in.
Remember to highlight the subtitle track in the window below, that was something i forgot in the beginning.

Best regards
Morten
