Jumpy playback on PS3 but not iPad

When playing "some" media to my PS3 via Wireless, the playback is choppy like it can't buffer it (or its transcoding)
The files are AVI's and it stated the media was compatible with PS3 without the need to transcode - if i put it on a USB and play it on the PS3 it works fine.

However if i run xmbc on my iPad (wireless) it plays smoothly with no jumps etc. Switch back to the PS3 just to check and its still jumpy and stuttering.

I can't figure out what whether its the Network, Media or PS3. This has happened several times now

Please do not compare play a file over DLAN with playing a file over USB, its not the same PS3 firmware used.
Could you provide information about your avi file?
When you use xbmc, does the file is played in native format or transcoded?

I have a similar issue, high definition AVI files play choppy on my PS3 but play fine on my Bravia TV. Both my PS3 and Bravia are connected wireless. 720p mkv files play fine on PS3, 1080p are choppy.

This is your file format : AVI / MPEG4 Part2 AS@L5 720x304 XVID/ AC3
The only information I have about similar format supported by PS3 is:
DivX and VC-1 (WMV)
To play VC-1 (WMV) format files, you must go to (Settings) > (System Settings) and set [Enable WMA Playback].
Copyright-protected files or files that were encoded by using DivX 3.11 cannot be played.
No QPel, No GMC (No warppoints)

On 17 December 2007, firmware upgrade 2.10 was released for the Sony PlayStation 3, which included official DivX Certification. Firmware version 2.50 (released on 15 October 2008) included support for the DivX Video on Demand (DivX VOD) service, and firmware version 2.60 (released on 20 January 2009) included official DivX Certification and updated Profile support to version 3.11.[40]

Do you try to activate the DIVX (VOD) account on your PS3 ?
