Sony BD Player / SMP Profile - MKV

I am new here, but fairly savvy. I just installed Serviio and got it working with my Sony BDP-S590 blu-ray player. The default profile for this device was the Sony BD Player / SMP profile. The player saw the server fine, but when I went to play an MKV file I noticed that, for some reason, it was detecting it an AVI file and would not play it, said it was corrupt/unsupported. Figuring it was a problem with Serviio because I had been able to play these files fine with another DLNA server I decided to change the profile.
As it turns out the Sony Bravia TV (2012) - US profile worked fine. MKVs are recognized as MKVs and play flawlessly.
I wasn't sure if this should go in the feature request/bug fix section or this section as maybe I was doing something wrong.
Either way I wanted to get it up here in case someone else runs into the same issue.
Thanks.

We will create a specific US version of Sony BDP devices for the next release.
See this topic.

Great thanks! In the mean time the Bravia profile seems to be working well.

@StHapns247, I also have BDP-S590 US version with recent firmware.
What type of codecs (video and audio) do you have in your mkv file containers that work with the Serviio US 2012 Bravia profile? I'm looking for successful playback with H264/AVC video and some type of 5.1 audio.
I plan to transcode my entire library soon. I do a lot of transcoding using VideoRedo of Windows Media Center HD TV recordings in WTV containers having MPEG2 video and ac3 audio.

All my MKVs are created using Ripbot264 with the following results:
V: AVC @ 6144 Kbps High Profile
A: AC-3 @ 640 Kbps 6 channel 48 KHz
I also have a subtitle track embedded in the file, but this will not display on the blu-ray player. The only device I've gotten the subs to work with is the WDTV Live which is a disaster of a device outside of MKV playback.
So you will be limited to burnt-in, permanent subtitles.

@StHapns247, thanks. Any luck with skipping to chapter marks in the mkv?
I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Serviio license before spending ton of time experimenting/testing.

Chapter markers do not seem to work either. This is all dependent on the player though and not the server. Maybe future firmware updates will allow for this functionality, but most likely not.

Same behaviour here...Thanks for the suggestion about the profile!
I'm in Italy but I need "Sony Bravia TV (2012) - US" to see movies on my Sony BD Player.
Bye!

Chapter markers certainly do work on the Sony S390, 590 and 790 when playing MKV AVC Mpg4 native.

I'm trying to pre-transcode into MKV AVC with chapters in the container using ffmpeg, and playback with Serviio without transcoding during playback. My S590 isn't recognizing the chapters when trying to skip to next, but they are listed in 'ffmpeg -i *.mkv' output. Original input file for pre-transcoding is WTV (Windows Media Center) or MPEG2 TS (M2TS).
Any suggestions?

I am also having the same problems using a Sony BDP-S590
I'm on serviio-1.0.1 using the normal profile. Can't play .mkv or most files. I looked at profiles.xml but I guess that those were corrected with the new version. Funny thing is that it worked on 0.6.2 for a bit and then stopped randomly.

Transcoding to MKV/AVC from MPEG2/AC3 will cause a substantial loss in quality, not to mention the hassle of transcoding your library. Why not save your files in a container that maintains the original codecs? I use .ts files for my cable captures. Though chapters are not supported, for programs that include commercials I save each program segment (sans commercials) in a separate file and then save all of the segments for the program in a folder.
This method requires using the folder browsing method to access the files but enables skipping to each segment when desired. There will be slight buffering between each segment during playback, but this method works pretty well for my purposes and avoids the degradation of audio and video quality that will occur as a result of transcoding.

The loss of quality for MPEG4/AVC is limited if transcoding is done optimally. Chapter support is a must for me to buy a license for Serviio.
