BDP-Sx90 support for MKV subtitles

Hi Folks,

There is a discussion in AVSForum on the Sony BDP-S3/590 owners thread about subtitles and MKV files. I've been searching through previous postings here, but I mostly find that there are issues with subtitles and these players w/ Serviio. I just took my 590 out of my stack, so I can't test this myself right now.

If I embed an SRT in an MKV w/ HD audio (e.g. DTS-MA), and let's assume h.264 video, can I get this to playback correctly via serviio? Which profile would I use and do I need to customize anything?

Thanks and apologies if this is covered somewhere on this board and I missed it.

Thanks for the reply. Of course, that was the first thing I found and read on this topic. In particular these lines:

"- SRT subtitle files are not supported."

...and...

"- The European and Canadian (but not US) firmwares support subtitles and audio track selection for Matroska files. However, there are significant problems with this native Matroska playback, namely..."

However, someone on AVSForum is stating that soft subtitles in MKV files just work w/ the Sony player. So, I was wondering if the link above was out of date or if using a different profile (e.g. Bravia TV - 2012) changed things, or there was somehow a difference using embedded subtitles versus external files, or something else altogether.

The referenced link seems to say that if you have a US player, the answer is 'No', but if you have a Euro or Canadian player, and you can tolerate the MKV playback issues as described in the post, and make the profile changes described, then the answer is 'Yes'.

Do I have that right?

I would say yes, but I have not personally recheck management of subtitles with Sony BDP devices.
