LG choking on high-resolution MPGs

All our video-recordings are saved as MPG-files with 1440x1080 resolution. The Sony TV plays them nicely, but the LG begins to choke after the first few seconds. I don't think, this is Serviio's problem (it was the same, when I was using minidlna), but I wonder, if Serviio can offer some work-around -- like transcoding these into something, that's easier for the TV to chew...
