Subtitles - I just do not get it

I have an mkv, where the subtitles are like burned into the movie, when I view in eg VLC I cannot change subtitle or deselect.
I then have another mkv, where the subtitles are like layered in the movie, I can turn them off in VLC.
The first movie shows the subtitles through serviio and my pana GT30, the other one does not.
I have another file, where I placed the subtitles in the movie folder, same name (exact) as movie, srt format. But the subtitles are not seen by serviio or pana.
What can be the problem with the last one?
Can someone explain the subtitle feature, the way it is working, is my biggest challenge with serviio. So I would like to find a way to overcome this.

When adding a srt file to a folder, must I do a file update, or is it seen immediately, or only on playback???

Thanks in advance?

I assume the mkv is transcoded, so the embedded srt will be lost (file 2). You have to enable Embedded subtitles in the console, which will extract the subtitle file and serve it to the TV.

If it still doesn't work, enable Burned in subtitles in the console (but it'll transcode the video stream). Panasonic should support external subtitles, but it might not work for all video types, or the subtitle ile might be corrupted.

Post detailed log of playing the files.

The log doesn't show you playing any file.

Sorry for the delay. I can see you played transcoded file for Die hard, but that doesn't have subtitles (right?). The only mention of subtitles was for Gladiator, but you didn't play that file.

the die hard movie, has build-in subtitles, (that I can select in VLC player on PC) but they do not apear on TV.

And as I understood that should be possible.

yes, if you also enable embedded subtitles and provide the language code, as per http://www.serviio.org/index.php?option ... icle&id=33

thanks for trying to help out.

I did the ffmpeg to find:
Stream #0:2(dan): Subtitle: dvd_subtitle (default)

and I have "dan", among other codes listed, but it still does not extract it when I view it on my TV.

What can be wrong?

These are image-based subtitles which are not supported by Serviio. Only text-based are.
