After going through some of the posts regarding playing back mkv with external subtitle. I got the following suggestion.
1. Rename the mkv file to avi extension as someone said Panasonic TV doesn't read subtitle for mkv but avi only.
2. Remux the mkv with the subtitle

I have tried different scenario but all failed.

First, the following is my device info.
  Code:
2012-01-17 22:19:58,846 DEBUG [DeviceDescriptionRequestHandler] DeviceDescription request received for device 24d64742-f3b2-3c8c-8ebc-5fe79f342cbb from 192.168.16.103 (headers = [User-Agent: Panasonic MIL DLNA CP UPnP/1.0 DLNADOC/1.50,Host: 192.168.16.100:8895,X-PANASONIC-Registration: VklFUkEgRTMwIFNlcmllcwAAAAAAAAAAAAA=,X-PANASONIC-DMP-Profile: MPEG_PS_PAL JPEG_SM PV_DIVX_DIV3 PV_DIVX_DIV4 PV_DIVX_DIVX PV_DIVX_DX50 PV_DRM_DIVX_DIV3 PV_DRM_DIVX_DIV4 PV_DRM_DIVX_DIVX PV_DRM_DIVX_DX50])
2012-01-17 22:19:58,847 DEBUG [RendererDAOImpl] Reading a Renderer with ip address 192.168.16.103
2012-01-17 22:19:58,849 DEBUG [RendererManager] Looking for a renderer profile for Http headers: [User-Agent: Panasonic MIL DLNA CP UPnP/1.0 DLNADOC/1.50,Host: 192.168.16.100:8895,X-PANASONIC-Registration: VklFUkEgRTMwIFNlcmllcwAAAAAAAAAAAAA=,X-PANASONIC-DMP-Profile: MPEG_PS_PAL JPEG_SM PV_DIVX_DIV3 PV_DIVX_DIV4 PV_DIVX_DIVX PV_DIVX_DX50 PV_DRM_DIVX_DIV3 PV_DRM_DIVX_DIV4 PV_DRM_DIVX_DIVX PV_DRM_DIVX_DX50]

I've tried different methods but it all seems not working. If transcoding is enabled, the movie can be played back without subtitle. However, if transcoding is disabled, the movie cannot be read at all.

Please advise what to do. Thanks!

Hi.

Not shure how you remuxed it, but for my TV it only works with v.3.4.0 of mkvtoolnix.

Good luck.

Could you also provide information about your mkv file with MediaInfo tool result and "ffmpeg -i" result (see signature)?

Thanks,

Muxing mode : Header stripping

Header Compression, not supported by your panasonic.
Remux your mkv with proper option on mkvtoolnix : http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=header_com

Actually, how can I check whether my TV support mkv header compression? Moreover, are all mkv with header compression will show muxing mode as header stripping? How do I determine a mkv is compressed in header?

header stripping = header compression
