A lot of subtitles found online don't have good sync with the video stream and often get further out as the film plays.

I'm not sure how this could be implemented but it would be neat if you adjust the timing.

That won't be possible. One option to make this better is to implement opensubtitles.org API and get the right subs for the file, based on the file's hash.
