Forward and Backwards on Transcoded Files

It would be nice to figure out a way to get forwards/backwards to work on transcoded files.

While I know you can't do this with transcoded streams I do not know why it can't be done. A transcoded stream is still coming from a file in the temp directory, that is a real file in a format the client understands. So couldn't we have a full file in the temp directory that is being transcoded, so backwards would work since it has already been transcoded and saved, and forward should work up to the point that it has already transcoded.

For example as soon as play is hit the file transcoding begins and it is doesn't stop until the file is done or you stop playing. So if you pause it will keep transcoding more into the cache. This way if you have a fast enough system you could have a fully transcoded file in the cache while you are watching, and you could always go backwards because there is data to go backwards with, and you could go forward as far as it has already been transcoded.

Just a thought, as this would be a very nice feature as every file on my most used clients get transcoded. If you had to stop at some point for some reason it would be nice to be able to get back to where I left off quickly. And sometimes you want to go backwards to see something again.

It can be done and is working on some renderers. It's up to the renderers to ask the right data from Serviio (using the functionality that Serviio supports).

Has anyone figured out how to make DirecTV do this by chance?

This happens aleady as zip said. My atom NAS dumps out a film in about 2 mins usually.

I would disagree that this is not already happening for DirecTV as that is how I watch just about all my movies on. Which means they are always transcoded as I am not going to converted my h.264 collection to MPEG2.

So I ask again has anyone figured out how to make a DirecTV box do this? Meaning with the current released Serviio, and a HR24 DVR.

Serviio only supports time-based seek for transcoded files, not byte -based seek. So if the player doesn't support time-based seek (it's optional), it won't work.

Hi, I am new to serviio. Just installed the latest version 1.3 and got it up and running in no time. Amazing. Have been streaming MKV and MP4 files and can do FF, REW, time-based seek no problem. When streaming the transcoded vob files (ripped from a DVD) or RMVB files, FF/REW are not working. Not by the TV remote FF/REW buttons nor the Front/back arrow buttons. Serviio is running on an XP desktop. TV is a Samsung LED 6100 series (UN50ES6100) and the profile is automatically recognized as "Samsung TV / player (C/D series)" . Would love to be able to FF/REW on these two file types too.
