Hi.

I've been using the serviio pro 15 day trail software for a few days now on my dedicated server
im streaming everything through the mediabrowser and noticed 2 things that i'd like to see added.

1. Resuming video playback where you left off, just like netflix.
2. Xbox One app, i see in the xbox app store a Plex application but not Serviio - it would be nice to have my dedicated server streaming media to my xbox one using serviio.

It would be great if this could be done! either way ill purchase a pro license because everything just works like it should!

Hi, for Xbox One, just use the Media Player app, it's a DLNA client and works great with Serviio.

I should've been more clear about this, my apologies.
I'm having a dedicated server located outside of my home, its at worldstream.nl - i want the xbox to connect to this remote dedicated server, all media is stored on there.
DLNA is an option but it would mean that i have to manually download all media files from my remote dedicated server to a local PC everytime i wanna stream something to my xbox, its a bit troublesome! that is why i requested an Serviio app for the xbox one that allows connecting to remote servers that are not local.

Hopefully i cleared this up a little better, english is not my primary language.

Resuming playback is a function of your player, not Serviio. My Samsung players will resume, but my Sony, Roku and Panasonic players won't. I don't know if it's possible to add this to MediaBrowser.

You are confusing two different types of services. Serviio is a DLNA server, which only functions on an internal network. Serviio offers the MediaPlayer web interface with the Pro version for accessing from outside the network. You are looking for something that does not use the DLNA standard.

You mentioned Plex. Plex offers an app, that is true. But it still only works within a private network. Plex can be accessed over the Internet, but again only using a web interface and connecting through the Plex web site.

About the playback resume request.. my suggestion would have been for the Media browser player to have the resume function but zip did not comment on this particular feature request so im just going to assume that this wont happen anytime soon.

Again, Serviio is not designed to provide streaming outside your internal network. It uses the DLNA standard, which intentionally does not work across the Internet. For my money, it's one of the best DLNA servers available. But doing what you ask would require a complete, ground up change in the program. Just building an Xbox app would accomplish nothing, because there's no connection mechanism within the DLNA standard for such an app.

There are ways to connect two networks across the Internet that makes them appear to be local to each other (usually some sort of VPN), but that gets quite technical and requires administrative access at both ends. Without getting into professional (and expensive) software, I doubt what you are asking is viable.

So? why stick with a initial design model instead of evolving? ontop of that it does provide streaming outside your internal network -> Media Browser

It does not. You do not appear very technical to me by making comments like that.. the media browser feature from serviio which is active at port 23424 could be used by the xbox one app to obtain data remotely.

It definitly is something that could be created if there is a true motivation for it, but judging by your reply and the lack of other replies there's none. it looks like i wasted my time here.

Oh well, i'll just go and buy an extra long hdmi cable to connect my PC to my TV to fix this problem.

Well, I do have a little technical know-how, although not specific to the DLNA spec. You seem to be reading something that wasn't intended in my comments. I wasn't trying to be condescending, or otherwise talking down. If you took it that way, I apologize.

I do believe that what you list would require a wholesale change in the basic coding of the program. The MediaBrowser function is completely separate from the server function. The only network transport mechanism contained in Serviio is the DLNA standard. As I mentioned, that standard will not route across the public Internet. This is by international design. Now, could another transport module be added to allow a TCP routable packet to function outside the private network? Possible, but without knowing the inner workings of the program I couldn't guess how much work would be involved. It would also require a more robust security piece, which would be more work.

Serviio itself is not visible outside your internal network. All you can reach is a web page, which uses standard Internet protocols to display the video. No different from any other web site in that respect. The MediaBrowser is on top of Serviio, and provides a nice way to view your media from outside. But that's all you are reaching, a web site, not Serviio itself.

I'm not saying your idea doesn't have merit, but put it in this context. Serviio is a one man operation, and not his full time occupation. He has to balance the desires of his users with what can be done within a given timeframe. As you noted, based on the lack of comments it doesn't seem that there would be a lot of call for this.

Just because I personally wouldn't be likely to use something like this, doesn't mean that there isn't enough potential customers. For me, only one outbound stream would choke my Internet connection. Most Internet connections are asynchronous, meaning upload and download speeds aren't equal. While I have 50 Mbps down, I only have 5 Mbps up. Not even enough to support a single HD stream.

In closing, I wish you the best in your search. Perhaps our discussion has spurred Zip into thinking of a way that it could be done. Sometimes all it takes is someone bringing an idea forward to make the developer think about it more. That has happened on several programs I've written over the years! :lol:

I apologize if i misunderstood you in any way, it easily could've been a language barrier on my end.

First off let me mention that im not into developing java or any xbox one related applications, but i do program in other coding languages so generally i have an idea on howto get things done. if the xbox one allows devs to use flashplayer then you'd only have to create a webbrowser-alike application to connect to a remote server for obtaining + playing media content, it would not require any additional coding on the serviio software because the xbox one app would just connect to the remote mediabrowser ip+port to obtain the content just as on a regular PC's browser. if flashplayer is not allowed to be used on an xbox one then HTML5 might be an option.

I think theres definitly a way to make this happen but as i mentioned in my previous post, there probably has to be demand for this.

Why not just set up an openvpn server on your dedicated server (or somewhere on your internal network) thats always connected. Then your dedicated server will appear to be on your home network and DLNA will work as normal?

DLNA and upnp where not designed to be used over the web. Your comment about an app to connect to the server on port 23424 / 23425 is correct, it would work but would need someone to write an app (like Will has with serviigo for android)

I agree having resume support in Media browser would be a great feature to have

Yeah, creating a vpn server on the remote server is definitly something that would work - my problem with this is that it requires to open yet another port in the server's firewall to allow vpn connections, this opens up the server to authorization bruteforce attacks on the vpn protocol port, if one of these attacks succeed then the attacker would be able to do any kind of illegal activity with my server IP as cover, i will be hold responsible for any illegal activities done by my rented server (which is only fair but sucks if hacked..) ontop of that i have to buy a new router that has a VPN feature to route it to my xbox.

Right now im having a long HDMI cable running from my pc to the xbox one to make the serviio mediabrowser run on my tv screen but this is a quick 'n dirty fix, it is unconvient to have a extra pc running just to output the video data to my xbox.

An Serviio application that allows xbox users to connect to remote servers for the video data would eliminate all problems and saves alot of hassle.

If you generate a decent certificate (2048 + , 4096 is even better, rsa) and keep the private certificate safe people won't be able to bruteforce your server.

Anyway, an xbox one app would be a great feature and i imagine would be a big pro to some people for buying serviio
