Ideas for improvement

Hi,

I am really glad that you have made this tool/server. It is currently one of a few that really seems to work.
I am still investigating the profiles.xml file to tune it.

I have a Panasonic TX-P46VT20 E 3DTV.

Some points:

- DVD/VOB files

the server plays vob files nicely, but when you have various dvd's ripped to disc in their native format, your library fills up quickly under the letter V as all VOB files of all DVD's appear in this list. End result is that all movies in the V section get " spammed" together in one big list which makes usage difficult.

I was wondering if it might be a possibility to make the server read the IFO instead of the VOB, so that way you can play back a DVD through it's original menu system.

It would also clear up the lists I get in the Panasonic TV. Some movies have 10 or 20 VOB files and all of them carry the same movieposter so you have a hard time determining which to start first. Also once a VOB is played it will not play the next one automatically.

-Mpeg2ps versus ts

I am wondering why the mpeg2ts stream is mostly used instead of the ps stream. Wouldn't a PS carry more options like multiple audio and subtitles and isn't it more stable then a ts stream ?

- profile change for options passed to ffmpeg

In the forum there are various options being discussed along them are the commandline options passed to ffmpeg.
They seem to determine the final results one get's from the server and from transcoding/remuxing.
Wouldn't it be a smart idea to create a ffmpeg.xml and use that so the user can test other commandlines ?
( or is this already somewhere and I have just not found it ??)

Regards,

Peter

For now I'd suggest you join your VOB files into 1 mpeg file

Mostly used because it can wrap H264 video, not just mpeg2

At the moment I want to keep the config file as easy as possible, without particular command parameters. In a case I decide to change the transcoder in future the 'agnostic' configuration can still be used. It is also easier for most users. Obviously if you come across an argument that will make the result better don't hesitate to share with us and it can be incorporated in a future version.

Hey Zip,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Combining VOB's into one file is like converting an MKV into a TS stream...it's a workaround...;)

Would you be able to use .ISO and read that ? If so, then we could dump all files that should be together into an ISO file and that might solve the multiple-vob issue as well . It might even work for combining other filetypes with their needed .SRT files.

Cheers,

Peter

Absolute rubbish having hundreds of VOB file is just a symtom of a lazy user that cant be bother in doing one more step when Ripping a DVD to there pc.

There maybe other ways but this one is easy enough for most users.

DVD files playback can be supported via reading the IFO file:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1995

If you want it, create a BitBucket ticket for Zip (see sticky thread in the Support sub-forum, but check the guy from that thread hasn't already raised a ticket).

With all due respect Mr Smartypants...if you'd care to read...you would have seen that I proposed an ISO as a container to solve the issue.

I know you can rip to MKV but my Panasonic tv doesn't read MKV...so that's no solution...it is merely another container you are pouring the data into which unfortunately my Panasonic doesn't read.

So in the end, your post is ...euh....as you say so elegantly..." Absolute rubbish " ;)

Have phun !

Peter

The other guy is referring to listing just 1 vob for metadata info instead of using all vob's.
Not quite sure what that would resolve.

I made a new ticket for the IFO support.

I think it's the same idea, I marked yours as duplicate of that one and will keep both in mind when implementing it
