As I was thinking it would be nice to incorporate Navi-X

Navi-X is a plugin that allows you to stream and watch online content. It can be installed on Boxee and XBMC

Serviio is a DLNA server that serves up content your TV or Bluray player's existing menus. There isn't any scope for that level of customization (interactive searches etc.).

I totally agree with you but Navi-X is only a web plugin, and I hope the new version of Serviio is going to have web streaming capabilities

but only of feeds, if this plugin can generate RSS/Atom feeds then yes.
It won't be able to parse an HTML page and retrieve content from there, at least not yet

I know what your thinking, the Navi-X plugin seamed to work on the Wii, XBMC and PS3 Media Server and there must be a light plugin for it to work on the Wii.

Glad to join this conversation already in progress... My name is Bill Daly and I work on Team Navi-X for our app, Navi-X. Navi-X is basically a user-based playlist system for hosting and managing playlists of content, linking directly to all sorts of video, audio, pictures, podcasts, rss/xml, html and live streams all around the internet. It's like a big funnel for all kinds of multimedia content. People can create their own playlists and add links to content on the internet like Movies, TV Shows, Music, Mixtapes, etc and add customized backgrounds, logos and icons for design. You can also search and browse content from within Navi-Xtreme, our playlist hosting site or from video hosts directly like Videofriender, DIvxStage and MegaVideo.

With this in mind, we already have someone porting over Navi-X for Playon Media Server. Here are some crude shots below but you can also check out the thread at playonplugins.com

If anyone would be interested in porting over Navi-X in some shape or form as a plugin for Serviio, please let me know on this thread or at xironbillx@gmail.com please. Thanks for your consideration.

Just adding on what I put here yesterday... I wanted to say no matter the platform, if it supports plugins, I think any media based app should look to going to as many platforms as humaly possible. Navi-X is an open-source script for XBMC originally. It's over 4 years old now and I've been working on trying to make it better with my friends on Team Navi-X. If you checked out our website already at www.Navi-X.org then you would know Navi-X is essentially a script/addon for XBMC and Boxee. There is also a port of sorts on WiiMC, the media center for jailbroken Nintendo Wii's but it's limited in playback. Technically, you can currently get Navi-X on several platforms using these media centers or custom applications like a media remote released recently where people who run Boxee software on their pc or Boxee Box can now stream Navi-X content directly to their Android phones and tablets. We are also working with the developer to try and get it ported to GoogleTV as well. XBMC is available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Live boot disc, iPhone 4, iPad and Apple TV 1&2. Boxee can work in some form on these tablets too. Now with the beginnings of Navi-X access on android tablets and phones and soon the set top, it's safe to say we are on all the major platforms already thanks to XBMC and Boxee porting. I recently started reaching out to folks at other lesser known projects to see if someone with coding skills in their native media environment would be willing to port Navi-X in some shape or flavor for their OS and currently we have projects running for ports on SageTV, Playon Media Server, and Showtime (media center for jailbroken PS3's).

I believe developing plugins for Serviio involves making java based plugins so please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking for someone in Serviio development to help us port it over. If you want some framework to go off of, I can get you with Sharkhunter for PS3 Media Server who made a plugin for Navi-X or Sptuck at PlayonScripts.com... they both are working on java based ports right now.

Hi Ironbill, there is no plugin system in Serviio. If the integration involves some work on Serviio's part, it'll probably take some time before I get the chance to even look at it - not enough time ;-/

Ironbill, What is the output of Navi-x? Is it a html webpage with links to all the videos added? I could see using Navi-x with serviio, if Navi-x served as a online feed clearinghouse / or webpage with all the links to the online videos that I want to watch via Serviio. I am not sure if this is what Navi-x is setup for. I will install Navi-x on my computer at home with xbmc and see what it does and see how serviio and navi-x could work together.

Basically, type represents the type of media (video, audio, image, rss, txt, html, etc.), Name is a text label for the item, thumb is a preview thumbnail fo the item, URL is the item you wish to play, processor is basically linking to a serverside scraper for processing URL final destinations for injection and playback into the player, player is an override option for dvdplayer or mplayer in XBMC and rating is a rating for the item from other users. If you can make a parser read the output of a Navi-X playlist, it's golden. Then just display a list based on parsings.

Hopefully reading the contents of a playlist will help you find easiness to porting this into a function for Serviio... please don't just say no for the hell of it peeps! I know you would like to get access to almost everything on the internet in a quick and easy to use search and browse tool for streaming media and we already have 245,000 users who help contribute links... cmon!

So the integration with Serviio would then enable browsing the published content on your site as if it was served by Serviio? Is it basically a feed of items (playlists, media files) that are present online and aggregated by your users? If so why not to just publish it as rss feeds? In that case Serviio could just get the content as RSS feed (in 0.6).

I have to admit the thought crossed my mind but didn't gain much traction. I e-mailed our site admin to see what it would take to output our current playlists into RSS and am awaiting a response. Now that I think it through, it would make it a hell of alot easier for people to parse RSS feeds since XML is softer ground to tread for noobies. We shall see what Turner3d says here:

It would be better to use the open standard for content syndication rather than inventing your own as a team and trying to develop plugins for various media players. Then thousands of apps can use it directly and you are free concentrate on the content

The problem is that most websites use ip-based protection schemes for delivering content. We have what are called "processors" which are just basically scrapers that figure out the final destination of a URL and load this link into the media player for playback. Essentially, our NIPL python libs would have to be loaded in Serviio so that Navi-X could call processors and obtain the final destination URL for delivering the content to you. So essentially a call would be made to the processor for the URL in a playlist listed, then it would decipher a URL based on your ip address and delivery it to you. This is why we are unable to just make RSS feeds because a web hosted script has to be interacted with to decode final URL's for media. People link directly to web page links for Videofriender, MegaVideo, etc and the dynamic URL for the file is located via these web-based processors... they are kind of like plugins, only since they are hosted on a server, nobody has to update the script when functionality is broken... we fix it and service is restored automatically.

This is why we can't just use RSS feeds because of server hosted "processors" needing to be used for decoding the final URL of a media file... the Navi-X Instructional Processor Language libs have to be loaded and utilized...

Also, current standards for content syndication don't really compensate for the different kinds of media formats out there... I don't mean just codecs but protocol handling of invoking different media formats... that bridge is still being built. Our processors allow you to make calls to server hosted scripts for processing URL destinations accurately and RSS cannot handle that at this time.
