Improved Metadata Updates

I have a fairly large library, which is only occasionally updated, so I turned off aut0-updates and do it manually.
When I add a new movie or series I manually check for metadata updates. It takes 1-2 hours to complete. This is hardly efficient since I really don't want to update existing metadata, but only add the metadata for the added items. There are a couple of ways this can be accomplished.
1) When scanning the library, ignore any files which have metadata. Perhaps a simple option?
2) Permit me to select the items in the library that Need metadata updated. I presume this would be more difficult since we don't have access to the library from a maintenance standpoint.
Another helpful enhancement would be some sort of progress indicator as the library is scanned. I.e. n of xxx files scanned..
I see there are plenty of requests for enhancement, and no recent upgrades. Is v2.1 all we can expect for the future?
