Serviio shouldn't care how the two are connected, so an Ad-hoc connection shouldn't be an issue. If you are using the Wi-Fi for the ad-hoc and also have a network connection via Ethernet, remember that Serviio will only be available on one of them. If you have multiple connections, you can choose which one to use in the Serviio Console.
The important thing to remember is that both computers need the ad-hoc network to have an IP address within the same range and subnet. I would imagine that you have to set the IP address manually for an ad-hoc. Don't use the same address range that your Ethernet is using (if you have that).
Curious how you will play from the 2nd computer. My Linux knowledge is really outdated, so I am unaware of what software is available. Is there a DLNA client you plan to use? I know VLC supports it, but my experience with it is less than satisfactory, to say the least!
