hi,
could someone tell me please if the library update causes HDD wake up? I'm having most of my media files on drives which normally sleep. Does the automatic update trigger wake up? If so, what would be your suggested way of dealing with library update in that case?
thanks!

Wake up...that depend.
With my Buffalo External Network DD, serviio wake-up the device from his standby mode, when browsing or updating the library. But the device must be power-up in standby mode.

that's what I was afraid of. So to prevent disk wear out, I need to disable automatic library updates then.

Hmm, I thought it is not good for a drive to constantly start/stop either.

Its actualy worse for a drive to be stopped and started constantly, these drive sleep setting are great for saving power but not if you want your drive to last longer.

true. It would be great if I could just select file to play from a disk, rather than first making it part of serviio library. Is there any way to do it?

That's why I disabled the automatic update(uncheck box for each folders). I'll only start an update when I'll add a new media.

Modern SATA drive dont suffer that badly from wear out, they are good for many many many happy years of streaming ( based on well known brands ) approx 10 years. ( how many ppl still use a 10yo hdd ? not many)
